OJA, Johannes "Hannes" - Passed away peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2012 at the Leaside Retirement Home in Toronto at the age of 93. Predeceased by Ellen, his beloved wife of 64 years. Loving mother of Heikki (Helen) and Lembi (Tom). Cherished grandmother of Matti and Ben (Maggie). Survived by sister Hilda in Estonia. Hannes was a journalist and poet. An active member of the Estonian community in Toronto, he was the editor of the Estonian twice weekly newspaper "Vaba Eestlane". He belonged to the Ethnic Press Association of Ontario and the International PEN club. Amongst all of the organizations to which he contributed, Hannes especially cherished his membership in the Estonian Finnish War Veterans Club, the "Soomepoisid". He will be deeply missed by all his family, friends and colleagues in Canada and abroad. A Funeral Service for Hannes will be held at St. Peter's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, 817 Mt. Pleasant Road, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2012, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time. Cremation to follow.
