JOHN EVANS Obituary

JOHN ROBERT EVANS Died peacefully at home February 13, 2015 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. John enjoyed a full life marked by contributions on many fronts. He pioneered a new model of medical education as the founding Dean of McMaster University Medical School in 1965. He served as President of the University of Toronto from 1972 - 1978. He was the first Director of the World Bank's Population, Health and Nutrition Division. He was the CEO of Allelix, Canada's first biotechnology company, the Chair of TorStar, the first Chair of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the Chair of the Rockefeller Foundation and most recently the founding Chair of MaRS. Throughout his career and his life, his greatest satisfaction came from caring for others as a clinician and mentoring colleagues in their careers. Born October 1, 1929, John joined siblings Mary, Watson, Gertrude, Gwendolyn, Anne and Elizabeth as the youngest of 7 children of Mary and William Watson Evans. John will be missed by his loving wife Gay of 61 years, his children Derek, Mark, Michael, Gill, Tim and Willa, his daughters/son- in-laws Janet, Sarah, Lise, Alayne and David and his 23 grandchildren. The family is grateful to a wonderful care team that included Drs. Dear Mrs Evans,

Mine is definitely a voice from the past knowing your family (and nanny Rosemary) in Ancaster in the 60´s. How fondly I remember chatting to you and Dr Evans in your beautiful home on Halson Street..with all your children so young , Willa barely beyond infancy..

You and Dr Evans came to my wedding and I can remember the gift you gave me!

So many more positive thoughts come to my mind as I remember "The Evans"..

I send my deepest condolences to you and your children.

Hello Mrs. Evans, Michael and the entire Evans family. Thank you for taking me in at 93 Highland all those years ago. I have so many fond memories of those times and of Dr. Evans. I was not able to make it to Toronto but have been thinking of all of you at this time. Marten

Dear Mrs Evans,
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of your dear husband John.
I worked closely with him on a business board in the early 2000's and found his unique ability to transcend both the business and medical fields exceptionally admirable. His intellect and calmness were qualities his colleagues admired and respected.
He will be sorely missed.
Yours truly,

Catherine Leslie Quinn

Message for Gay Evans

John was still Pres. of U of T in 1975, when I moved from Engineering (where Jim Ham was Dean), to become sec'y to Frank Iacobucci, V-P Internal Affairs. I had only peripheral contact with John at the time, but followed his career over the years. I became a good friend of Lynn Collins, John's sec'y, and have kept in touch with her over the years. Also with Gay (Mills) McNeil, and Chris Takenaka, daughter of Kay. I am also in touch with Mary Ham.

John was a brilliant and committed person, who contributed hugely in the areas of medical education, post-secondary education, as well as in other areas. He was an extraordinary person and citizen.

I'm sure that he could not have achieved all that he did without your constant support.

Although his passing was not a surprise, as he had been ill for some time, it it nevertheless sad, as we have lost a brilliant and wonderful man.

My condolences to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Ruth N. Botelho
