To the Legge and Stokes families:
Mrs. Legge was one of the finest lawyers due to her integrity, compassion, commitment of service to the community, her ability to get things done with grace and style, and her kindness to her clients and staff. Her contributions as Treasurer of the Law Society were always very much appreciated. Mrs. Legge put her family first as well as somehow finding the time to assist with many charitable organizations and boards, and make the best homemade pies imaginable when in Uxbridge. I would like to express again my deepest condolences to those closest to Mrs. Legge, home and office, as she and Mr. Legge were treasured individuals.

In the short time that I've known Mrs. Legge, she had treated me as if I was part of her family. She always asked about my wife and children - which meant a lot to me. There were times that I needed to get some advice and she provided me with sound judgment that wasn't complicated and made absolute sense. I will miss her sense of humour, her stories and the fact that she remembered every detail of our conversations. She was a wonderful person and someone who I truly admired. My condolences to her family and friends.

My mother, Mrs. Irene Sheridan, first met Laura on their first day of attending the University of Western Ontario, in 1940, both were riding the London & Port Stanley Railway from St. Thomas. They became fast friends.

As an aquaintance and client of Mrs. Legg, I was impressed by her integrity and sense of humour.

I pray for the repose of her soul and for her family.

I first met Laura at an RCASC function at the armories and later she became my lawyer in1952 in a property purchase and has remained a close freind to me and all of my extended family of my parents, uncle, my sisters and their in-laws till the present. She was the finest example of a kind, caring and considerate person who went to great length to complete things to the last detail. It was my pleasure to have known her and counted her as one of my freinds. She will be missed but not forgotten.

I have known Laura Legge for over 55 years. We met in my 3rd year as a new Canadian and my memory of her is as a caring, compassionate human being and a fierce advocate for the fair treatment of others. She gave of her time tirelessly and without reservation, to her family, friends and to the clients she served. Laura lived her life with an unmatched passion. I am honoured to have known her and to be able to remember her as my friend.

Laura made special snack for our group when we attended the Legge home at the invitation of our Sunday School teacher Bruce Legge. As a small group of ten year old boys from Westmoreland United Church we were made to feel welcome. By their actions the Legges taught us solid Canadian values. We thank them.

Laura Legge was one of the finest human beings ever to grace our experience. She used her considerable talent, knowledge and wit as a fearless defender of the weak against the venal and corrupt. Along with her late husband, she possessed a nobility and a willingness to support causes for the public good; causes that often become forgotten by our official ‘Public Service’. In her practice she was guided not by asking “Is it legal?” but rather “Is it fair?”
May we offer our sincere condolences to all members of the Legge family, and to her colleagues at Legge & Legge.

To the Family of Laura Legge,
As the daughter of Dorothy Laurel (Legge)Calver, who passed away May 16th 2006, I would like to extend my sympathy to the family. My mother had told me of her relationship with Laura when they were young women and her respect for her.

To all of Laura Legge's family:

I remember the Legge Family as a respected and valuable component of the Westmoreland United Church congregation who I saw (like Sue (Collins) Gilbert has noted) every Sunday from the choir loft.

I was extremely fortunate to have had Laura as my Sunday School teacher and as one of the strong women in my life who provided a beacon for me (and others) as I searched for my own strength and place in the world.

My condolences to you all.

October 8, 2010

I always appreciated her warmth and wit. She was a tough lady when it came to law, but her heart melted when she spoke of her children and grandchildren.

It was a comfort to look out the back door of our home as we let out the dog to see the soft light of her kitchen. I don't think there was another person in this city that was up as early as she was.

She often said she loved the view into our garden and we were sure to trim the trees so she could watch things grow.

We will all miss her smile and grace.

Elizabeth, John and Bruce,

I remember your family well from the Westmoreland United Church days. I was in Miss Wilson's choir and faced your family each Sunday morning.

Mrs. Legge was my Sunday School teacher and I had a chance to visit her a few years ago while attending a Soroptimist meeting in Toronto. I shared with her one of my favourite memories of our Sunday School class attending a party at your home and then going out to see "Dr. Zhavago" in the movie theatre (if that isn't dating me too much!).

My prayers are with you in your time of loss. Your mother was a true lady and advocate.

Warmly,
Sue (Collins) Gilbert (niece of Emily and Gordon Keele)

Elizabeth, John and Bruce

I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. I renewed our acquaintence a few years ago at one of the Toronto Soroptimist meetings and it was good to see her again after so many years.

I told her that my favourite memory was of the students in her Sunday School Class being invited to the house on Londsale for a party and then we all went out to see "Dr. Zhavago" in the movie theatre.

I remember your grandparents as well from their years at Westmoreland United Church. I sang alto in Miss Wilson's choir and faced your family in the third pew every Sunday (or was it the second?!)

My prayers are with you all. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend the funeral do to work commitments.

Fondly,
Sue (Collins) Gilbert (Emily and Gordon Keele were my Aunt and Uncle)

When I light a candle for Laura Legge, it will be dim in comparison to the beacon that she was - of goodness, sensibility, humour and courage.

Laura served my husband's family and then ours from 1969. She had our utmost trust, respect and admiration. I will cherish the few personal moments we at times shared.

Her memory will always burn brightly for me.

You won't know me but my father, John France, served under your dad in the militia and eventually your mother became my parents' lawyer many years ago; they both died in the 70's. My dad always spoke so highly of your parents.

My and Anne Druhan's condolences to John and his family. Laura Legge's deep conviction and disciplined caring for those around her-in particular John was clear to me and charming in what i have come to know as a distinctly Canadian truth.. I humbly offer the family respect and awe for Mrs. Legge's legacy-what a gift to cherish and pass on. Stephen Connell.
