MARY DOHEY Obituary

MARY IMELDA DOHEY, C.V.R.N. September 22, 1933 - June 12, 2017 Mary was the first living recipient of the Cross of Valour Medal for bravery of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme peril. She saved 200 passengers and crew member's lives in a hijacking of an Air Canada flight on November 12, 1971. When given the opportunity to stay behind with passengers by the hijacker, after she convinced him to let the plane land, she chose to go back up with her crew hoping she may be able to keep him calm and save them. When meeting Mary, you would never know about this prestigious award as she was humble and a woman of great faith in God. She accepted the joys and challenges in her life with equal grace. Mary was the youngest of 14 children and will be particularly missed by her niece Nora O'Rourke and her dear friend Judy. A very special thanks to all the staff at Dorothy Ley Hospice who filled Mary's last days with compassion and wonderful respect for her fierce independence. A celebration of Mary's life will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 25th on the main floor at 350 Princess Royal Drive, Mississauga, ON L5B 4N1. I had the pleasure of growing up with Mary as my neighbor on Shadeland. She was like my second mom i used to practically live at her house climbing the big old tree in her yard, we used to go strawberry picking ,and she let me take her Cross Of Valor to school when i was in grade 5 to show and tell. I remember her coming to see my mom right after the hijacking and listening to this woman tell her story and thinking how brave and wonderful she was. I lost track of Mary about 5 years ago when i lost my phone with her #. She will be greatly missed the world was a better place with Mary in it. God Bless Mary i know you were welcomed in heaven and will be one of gods greatest angels.

Mary,
Your voluntary work as a nurse in Kathmandu, Nepal in the 1960 for the Thomas Dooley Foundation was an addition to all the good you did in your life.
Rest in peace.

Although I only knew her at work many moons ago, Mary is not a person I'll ever forget - a kind and gentle giant who knew how to put a smile on any situation ... May she rest in peace.

May Mary find eternal happiness and peace. All the Dohey family are saddened by Mary's passing. We have so many fond memories of Mary when she stayed with us in Holyrood throughout the years.
My husband,Harry Dohey was very close to her and our family shared many good times. After Harry passed in 1998, we kept in touch over the years with letters, cards, phone calls and most recent my son, Wayne had a nice long visit with her. She recounted to him the endless love and joy that she felt when she visited our home in Holyrood. God bless!

Mary and I were airport friends and she was a joy to work with. She worked in the air, I worked on the ground. Mary never boarded an aircraft without first stopping to talk to the gate agents. One of my last conversations with Mary was at the ticket counter where she said, "Tom, I have had three careers. I have been a nurse, I have been a flight attendant, and I have been retired. Retired is best."

One of Air Canada's Treasures - Aunt Mary Dohey
Aunt Mary touched the lives of all our family. Mom (Agnes), Dad(Harry) and my brothers and sisters looked forward to Aunt Mary's visits. She usually stayed for a week or more at a time. She always treated us well and I'll never forget that contagious smile of hers.

I have a photo of both of us uploaded here which is taken at Toronto airport. I was on a high school trip in 1981 to the Canary Islands and had a layover in Toronto on the way back. I asked one of the Air Canada agents if they knew Aunt Mary and told the agent I was her niece and that I would love to see her. They had her paged as they thought she maybe in the airport as she was flying a domestic flight that day! In a short time, I saw Aunt Mary walking towards me. When she saw me, she cried and hugged me and was so happy that her dear brother, Harry's child took the time to look her up. We had a wonderful chat with lots of laughs and hugs.

She was semi-retired as Air Canada wasn't ready to let go of one of their "treasures". Aunt Mary you were a treasure to all of us!
Love,
Corinne Dohey (& family)
