Michael Glicksohn Obituary

MICHAEL DAVID GLICKSOHN (HONEY) Born May 20, 1946 in Portsmouth, England, died March 18, 2011 in Toronto after a lengthy illness. Amazing husband of Susan Manchester, he will also be missed by brother Manning (Louissa) and nephew Ray (Mary Ellen), sister-in-law Stephanie, cousins Dale (Petra), Jo (Howard) and Abby (Lindsay), great-nieces Willow and Jade, cousins Alison Purdy and Kevin Purdy (Rosemary), step-mother Hilary and by many, many good friends. Predeceased by his parents, Paul and Ellen (nee Mullane). Mike taught mathematics at Humberside Collegiate Institute for 34 years. He was involved in science fiction fandom for many years and won a Hugo Award for best fan writer. Each Memorial Day weekend for more than 25 years, Mike and his friend Michael Harper hosted MikeCon, which was attended by hundreds of friends and fans from across Canada and the United States. A service of remembrance will be held at Windermere United Church, 356 Windermere Ave., on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers or donations, Mike would probably appreciate it if you raised a glass to him.

I miss seeing you reading on the deck. Mike you would be so proud of Susans artistic talent and you wold love how much Cookie has given her and how blessed we are in Bloor West Village to have them both. The pair are a living legend already! Well lift a glass and drown the shamrock in your honour this March 17. Anne and Denis

A math teacher I feared as a student--he was deep voiced, extremely intelligent, and all that hair--yet he had an effective method with presenting the days lessons, in an understandable and passionate manner--some teachers you forget--this one (Michael) will be remembered forever; Ihor Rizen--HCI class of 77'

Dear Susan
I was very sorry to hear about the death of Michael. I was sending Avedon an email and read it on her facebook page.
Although, I only met you and Michael a few times,(once in London with Avedon) they were very pleasant experiences. For awhile after we met, I would see you or him in the Bloor West Village, but it has been sometime since I encountered either Michael or you in the Village.
I know that he will be greatly missed and that he touched many people through his career as a teacher and through his fanzine activities.

He may have taught my least favourite subject, but he did so in a very memorable way. I'll never forget playing with his pet boa constrictor....re-named Curiosity after it ate his wife's cat.
Thanks for keeping things interesting Mr. Glicksohn.
Cheers to you!

Mr Glicksohn was my grade 9 math teacher at Humberside and I adored and respected him because his eloquent math lessons and his signature beard made me feel like I was in the company of a great philosopher. When he came to class with his huge pet Boa constrictor wrapped around his arms - he was bigger then life!
Cheers to you Mr Glicksohn...Thank you for being a part of my life.
My condolences to the family.

Mr. Glicksohn had the patience and eccentricity to keep math a subject that would otherwise have been unpassable -thanks for the memories and for bringing the python to class-what an experience! Dasha HCI alum 77'

Mr. Glicksohn was a great teacher and I am thankful to have been one his students - in addition to turning me into a math geek (happily ... it's actually paid off quite well so far in my finance career), he as the man that taught me to be on time (recall former Glicksohn students: you'd be locked out of class if even 20 seconds past the bell!), and, most importantly, taught me to always be on guard - as "a day without a quiz, is like a day without sunshine".
Rest in peace Mike - and thank you so much for being an important part of my life.

Mike was an outstanding teacher of Mathematics for our son,
David. We will miss him sitting out on his chair on the front porch at Windermere Avenue, We always knew Spring was well on its way, and summer not far behind, when the bearded Mike was immersed in a book!

Susan, my condolences on your loss, may his memory be a blessing.

I was 17 when I met Mike, he wrote me my first ever LoC [a kind, encouraging one], he was at my first con [Torque 3], at my first British con [Silicon, Newcastle, '85], and I can't imagine fandom without him.
