Penny Bethke Obituary

BETHKE, Penny (Penelope Anne) - Peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Penny was the daughter of the late Norma and Raymond and the oldest sister of Ray Jr. (Laura), Kate, Mark and Mike (Robin). Loving aunt of Emma and Cameron, Leah, Kimberley and Lindsey, Sebastian and Alex, Jason and Kaeti (Frank). As Kaeti's godmother, Penny held a special place in her heart for Kaeti and Frank's children, Julianna and Sam. Penny will be missed by her cousins, Jim Planinsheck and Mary Parrott and her many lifelong friends. We will always remember Penny for the important life lessons she taught us: be passionate in your work, every good meal begins with good wine and ends with a fine dessert, there is nothing better than reading a good book and drinking a good scotch and most importantly, family is everything. Memorial visitation at the Paul O'Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Avenue East (between Warden and Pharmacy), Wednesday, June 15th, from 7 p.m. until the time of our service in the chapel at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Joseph's Health Centre would be appreciated.

I interned for Penny Bethke while she was a General Manager at C.C.R.I. She provided me with valuable guidance during the early stages of my career. I am grateful for having the opportunity to have known such a wise and wonderful person. Rest In Peace Ms.Bethke.

I was so surprised and saddened to hear Penny had died. I met Penny over 25 years ago when she worked at LCDF and I worked at Lantana, another co-op resource group. I remember her as smart, dedicated and funny. She had a down-to-earth quality that brought together just the right mix of idealism and pragmatism.

My condolences to her family and friends. Know that your sister, aunt and friend was valued by MANY people.

I worked with Penny at the LCDF and was saddened to hear of her passing.
But many smiles have since come to my face when I remember her always cheerful manner, her dedication to social causes and her enthusiasm towards the goals of the LCDF.
You will be missed but not forgotten.

My recollections of Penny go back to 1979 when she and I and later close friends all worked in the federal NDP campaign in Davenport. I was so impressed with her organizational skills and political smarts in that and numerous other election campaigns that I asked her to be my campaign manager when I became the federal NDP candidate in 1984. Rest in Peace my old friend.

I was fortunate to work with Penny at Campus-Coop.I was the first staff who welcome her in her new position as the director of operations and then later the GM of Coop. Penny certainly worked hard to operate with sound ideologies and conscientiously good ethics. My heart goes out to all her loved ones and those she touched during her life

My thoughts are with Penny's family (about whom she spoke often).

I was fortunate to work with Penny at Campus Co-op, where I learned an enormous amount from her breadth of experience and knowledge. She was a very giving mentor. Her passion and humour were greatly appreciated and will be greatly missed.

I only knew Penny briefly when I worked at CCRI and she was on the Board of Directors. You could always count on her to provide you with information about the Co-op sector - such a good source of information and knowledge. My condolences to family and friends, may she Rest-In-Peace

I will pray for Penny, whom I remember well as a friendly, effervescent girl and young woman parishioner of St. Thomas More Church in Scarborough. May she rest in peace after her difficult battle, and may her relatives and friends remember her with joy and love.
