S {cech} {cech} ARPNICKAS, Fr. Pijus Konstantinas, OFM - (1923 VI 01 - 2012 XI 09) Fr. Pijus Konstantinas Sarpnickas, OFM, son of Petras and Adolfina Sarpnickas was born June 1, 1923. in Å ates, in the municipality of Skuodas. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. In 1938 he entered Kretinga Franciscan High School. From 1941 he continued his studies at Telsiu High School. In 1943 he was drafted by the German Army. In 1945 he was wounded near Karaliauc {cech} {cech} ius and was captured. He fled to West Germany and entered the German Franciscan Order where he completed his High School and Philosophy studies. In 1949 he joined the Lithuanian Franciscans in the USA. In 1950 he made his Solemn Profession in the Franciscan Order. He was ordained into the priesthood on December 22, 1952. He served 12 years in New York City at the Lithuanian Cultural Centre, collecting donations and distributing Lithuanian media. He served the Mission for Lepers in New Guinea from 1966 to 1969 then due to many tropical diseases he was forced to return to the States. In 1979 he was assigned to Resurrection Parish in Toronto until his death. Family, friends and parishioners will be received at his church, Church of the Resurrection, 1 Resurrection Road, Etobicoke on Sunday, November 18th from 4-9 p.m. (Prayers at 7 p.m.) where he will remain until Mass is celebrated on Monday, November 19th at 11 a.m. Interment St. John's Lithuanian Cemetery, Mississauga. May the Lord receive him into his bosom, grant him eternal rest, and reward him for his years of service to God and his people.
