REX LORING
It is with deep sadness we report the passing of Rex Loring in Oakville, on April 21, 2017, at age 91. Rex, beloved son of the late Archibald James and Gertrude Laura Loring, was born and raised in Southampton, England. His studies in architecture were interrupted by the war. At 17, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and served as a glider pilot. After the war, Rex boldly moved to Canada to explore new opportunities. He was soon hired as a sound technician for the National Film Board. His life changed when asked one day to fill in on a voice-over. A natural mimic, Rex studied with a coach to lose the British accent, but maintained his unique intonation. His skills as a writer, impeccable sense of timing, and calm, authoritative voice, made broadcasting an ideal career path. He began with stints in Peterborough, Montreal and Hamilton, but became best known at CBC radio and TV in Toronto from 1955-1990. He delivered the news on World Report to listeners in Canada and internationally. He also appeared on Tabloid, Close-Up and Mr. Fix-It, and narrated over 1,000 documentary films.
Rex travelled the world on dozens of cruises. He enjoyed photography; theatre; classic films; jazz; refurbishing garage sales finds; meeting friends at the local pub; joke-telling; and always keeping up with the news of the world.
Rex will be dearly missed by daughters Elaine Loring (husband Sam Bornstein), Carrie Loring (partner Paul Nodwell), grandchildren Kate and Max Bornstein and Lee Mosbaugh (son to Garth Mosbaugh). Rex outlived his two wives: Jill Loring and Shirley Fox Loring, and partner Shirley Jane Scarfo. He cherished his extended families and a network of friends around the globe. Of special mention are Laura Scarfo (daughter of Shirley Jane), longtime friends Patricia Blair and Betty LaChapelle, and nephew Kevan Staples.
At Rex's request, arrangements are private only. All are invited to share stories at:
