ROY SMITH Obituary

ROY K. SMITH Dearly loved husband of Madeleine Thibault-Smith, died peacefully at home on October 23, 2013 at the age of 65 surrendering his spirit after an 11 month jousting tournament with a cancerous Dragon. In his final months, Roy talked with much pride and satisfaction about all the "big elements" in his life. A very successful 30 year police career which was his dream from the age of 5, when he would play hooky from kindergarten to sit on the curb in front of the police station in East York and watch the action. He also talked joyfully of the rich and supportive friendships enjoyed through his lifetime and how laughter and good times permeated the relationships. A lifetime of loving, owning and selling classic cars also gave him a great deal of enjoyment and when he could not maintain or drive them anymore, the Internet and televised car shows filled the gap. Roy will always be known as a guy who really enjoyed laughter and could always tell a great joke...with perfect timing every time. And in 1974, on his birthday, August 23rd, he met Madeleine and they have been together ever since. They married in 1977 - Roy always said this was his best birthday present ever. Madeleine, brother Gary (Bridget) and nephew Jason extend heartfelt gratitude to many who participated significantly to help his body through the all the stages of Dragon's attacks: Dr. G. Tardik, naturopathic doctor who provided energy and vitality sustaining treatments. Dr. P. Zalewski and Dr. S. Myrehaug at the Lakeridge Cancer Centre for their targeted attempts to tame the Dragon. Dr. D. Moorsom, who in compassionate care, eased the pain and supported the palliative process. The very competent and caring Northumberland VON team, without whom the palliative home care would have been impossible. Barb Phillips, Thanadoula who guided us lovingly through the planning of an intimate and private home funeral and Marie Ouellette who was at Madeleine and Roy's side 24/7 for many days. Thank you also to the caring family, neighbours and friends who were a constant source of support. Roy will be remembered, missed and always loved by Madeleine and family and many friends who are all invited to a Gathering of Thanksgiving and Remembrance on Sunday, November 17th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Best Western Hotel, Cobourg. 905-372-2105. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northumberland Hospital (nhh.ca) or Northumberland Humaine Society (northumberlandhumanesociety.com) would be appreciated. To The Smith Family,
I have such fond childhood memories of Roy and Gary growing up on Leroy Ave. in East York.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Roy's recent passing. Taken from his family way too young. My condolances to his entire family.

My deepest sincere sympathy to the Smith family. I grew up with Roy on Leroy Ave. in East York and still live here. He was a such a good friend to everyone around here. He has passed away at such a young age. I will always remember the "good times" we had growing up as teenagers. You are all in my prayers. Dianne Kruger-Bolam

Dearest Roy! Sam (Maurice) and I are so sad to hear of the passing of our "old" friend Roy. We often shared so many of our happy memories of when we were in his life and laughed heartily over the reminiscence. We were saddened to hear that Roy was ill and prayed that he would return to good health. Rest in Peace our dear friend. You were much loved and your spirit will be ever strong.
