SIDNEY (SONNY) LONG October 25, 1917 to July 4, 2012 Loving husband to his devoted wife Claire for 65 years. Loving father to his son Richard. Sonny served as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Artillery in Canada, England and Continental Europe in World War II and was awarded the France and Germany Star. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, General Wingate Branch and the Jewish War Veterans. Growing up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Sonny was a sprinter in track and field, a high school football player and a volunteer for the Glace Bay Fire Department. After the War, he became a successful businessman and owner of the New York Dress in Halifax. His favourite hobbies were playing golf and fishing. Sonny was a kind and gentle soul who will be remembered in our hearts forever. Memorial Service will be held at Steeles Memorial Chapel in Thornhill on Thursday, July 5th at 10 a.m. and the funeral at the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery in Halifax on Friday, July 6th at 11 a.m. Shiva will be at 7 Townsgate Drive, Apt. 513 in Thornhill from Sunday, July 8th to Tuesday, July 10th with services being held on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 8:40 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday at 8 a.m. and 8:40 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit in care of the QEII Foundation in memory of Sidney Long.
