Terry Goodenough Obituary

TERRY GOODENOUGH It is with great sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Terry on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the age of 52. Beloved son of Frances and the late Arthur Goodenough. Loving brother of Patricia VanRassel (James), Laura Borg (Daniel), Cathy Hahmann (Oliver) and Mary Janzen (Christian). Cherished uncle of Jennifer, Paul, Paige, Erika, Meghan, Emily and Jacob, all of whom he was very proud of. As a beloved member of the running community he coached the cross country and long distance teams for the University of Waterloo, Laurel Creek Track Club and the Toronto Olympic Club. He also coached numerous national teams as well as being a national competitor and All American himself. Terry has had success in developing and coaching numerous athletes from the beginner level all the way to the national and international stage. He had a very generous heart, always a smile on his face and an encouraging word to say. He will be missed by all who knew him. We loved him and will miss him tremendously. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter 'Neweduk-Erin Mills' Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., (1 block east of Erin Mills Pkwy.), Mississauga, on Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your consideration for a contribution to a memorial scholarship fund to be set up in Terry's name.

I am saddened to hear the news of Terry's passing. It is a shock as he was always so youthful. Terry coached me in cross-country running at the University of Waterloo. His approach was kind, inspiring and always filled with humour and encouragement. It was a pleasure to know him and an honour to be coached by him. My condolences go out to his family.

It is with great sadness that I heard the news of Terry's passing. I first met Terry back in 1976 when he displayed such excellence and courage as a one of Canada's very best 1500 metre runners. When we moved to Edmonton in 1991, one of the very first people I met was Terry. He was always in the best of spirits, optimistic, ever smiling and great company. He loved to talk about track, the personalities, the races and the sport in general. My deepest and heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends.

The Clemson cross-country and track team along with his family has lost a hero. I personnally has lost a friend of outstanding nature. Goodenough so to say, for four years at Clemson University and entire Tiger Paw squad relatated very well. It is very sad news to loose a person of Terry's caliber.

i remember racing Terry in the old CNE indoor track in the early 70's. He was a year or so older and my twin brother and I admired his ability as youngsters. I was there at Centennial Stadium at Ofsaa in 1976 I think when he outkicked a certain Tom Lobsinger for the big upset win. He was a great track runner with good times. We ran on the Toronto Olympic Club togther in the mid eighties. He was a quiet generous person. He lent me his Adidas spikes at the 1984 Olympic Trials in Winnipeg for my 10,000m. We were also at fellow TOC Mike Vidito's wedding in 1985. From what I'm hearing, he was a great coach. He had the personality, knowledge, and skill. He made a difference.

I got mail from Kathy last Friday and still can't believe it.
I stayed Dave and Kathy's house for 2 months in 2004.
And I met their friend, Terry.
He sometimes visited our place and we enjoyed conversation over dinner.
I can't speak English very well. Terry spoke slowly and intelligibly to me.
We went to Oktoberfest but he wouldn't dance. So, I danced Kathy instead.
He was really kind and smart. I am so sad.
May his spirit rest in peace.

I knew Terry from cycling - travelling in a group to Finger Lakes and to Kingston and riding together. Always generous and always steadfast. Terry could match and maintain any cycling speed but was also patient with a straggler like me. It is such a shock to hear that this wonderful life has been interrupted far too soon. My prayers and thoughts are with Terry's family, friends and all the runners and cyclists he has influenced with his generous spirit and wise heart.

Sorry to hear the sad news. Terry was a good friend. Terry was my Ontario team mate in the race photo that was posted. This was from a 1976 Ontario-Quebec-New York triangle meet one week before Terry won the OFSAA 1500m in record time.

Very sad to hear of Terry's passing. I remember Terry from our high school days running for Vincent Massey C.I. I was a grade 9 midget and he was our best senior runner. He was something else in cross country and also in track. I haven't seen him since the 1970's but I remember he was down to earth and an inspiration to us guys just starting out. My deepest sympathy to his family.

We logged several thousand miles together, many laughs, some politics, a few surges, a little pain but always a pleasure. An outstanding training partner, a true friend and a very fine person.

As an old high school teammate of Terry's I was lucky to have been able to run with him every day. Or at least I tried to run with him -- many days there was just no keeping up to his torrid pace. Terry was a brilliant athlete who led quietly and by example and always with a light touch. And no matter how gruelling our workouts, Terry's enthusiasm and sense of humour helped make them the highlight of my day. My deepest sympathies to all members of his lovely family.

It would be hard to think of a nicer guy on all those Teams over the years... I remember Terry as always excited to lace up and go for a run, in any city, any time, anywhere. Such a kind person. I loved to be able to "join the guys on a run" when Terry was there - we'd have such genuine conversation about all sorts of things. And through the track world I was able to hear bits and pieces about Terry's successes as a coach - in his quiet way he would be so giving and patient and dedicated - so wonderfully inspiring for all those young athletes. It's hard to understand the circle of life, but you are alive and well in my heart Terry. - Lynn Kanuka-Williams

Terry was always a kind sole and very funny. Yet when it came to distance running that was his passion. You see I attended Vincent Massey Collegiate and was apart of that distance running team . We also joined the Olympic Track
Club and the red shirts I believe we were called the Mercury club. Many hours were spent after school running the grounds of Centennial Park and along the roads of etobicoke which were mapped out for distance.
Depending whether it would be a 5,8 or 10 mile training night. We trained hard but it was fun!!
I was lucky enough to have meet with Terry's family last night at his wake and recall these lasting and cherished memories of Terry.
My deepest sympathy to his entire family.

I was very sad to hear about Terry. Some of us were talking yesterday about how back in highschool, he always had time for us "minor niners". Even back then, his encouragement and his skill and dedication were inspiring.

Terry was my coach and friend for over 10 years and I've been through a lot on my trails. Making some national teams was made possible with his help and guidance. It was great when he was one of the coaches that went to Chiba Ekiden in 2008, allowing me the chance to have my coach there for support and guidance. Terry was always soft spoken and during a race you could always hear his clam vocie over the yelling of other's. Once when I was trying to make a standard I asked what if I'm not Goodenough...the reply "I'm Goodenough your Nakluski" in a joking way. He was there for me when I was having hard times and injury problems last season and he always believed in me. Which make's it easier to do well. I do know that we didn't always agree on everything as he would sometimes got on my case about drinking coke and eating candy, but he wasn't going to win that battle. I think that over the next while it will be hard going to Waterloo Park to train and release that he wont be there. I remember running really well at the 2008 Canadian road race champs in Ottawa and running a huge pb and being real excited to get home and call Terry. Wanting to do well at cross I was having second thoughts about Ekiden relays, but it didn't take long for Terry to talk me into it. I'm so glad that I went on that trip and that Terry went aswell. I believe he also ran Ekiden as an athlete some time before and he was telling me about what it would be like. The last time I saw Terry was at the Harry Spring Run Off and I think he was happy with my race and I am very gald of that, after dropping me and Adam off at my house he mentioned that he was having minor surgury and let me and Adam know that it wasn't a big deal. Terry has been a mentor and coach and wanted his athlete's to become better people as well as better athletes. I talked to him on the phone once after his surgury and that was a real pleasent conversation as he seemed to be doing fine. I think for myself things have been easier because I was able to talk to him and see him before he passed, I know alot of people that were part of Terry's life might not have had a chance to see him or talk to him before his passing and that can make things more difficult. I was lucky to have those last few moments and I thank god for that, also that tehy were good moments and not arguements. I will always remember Terry and it'll be hard not to think of him when I'm out on the trails. I know Terry will carry on in the lives of those he touched, he helped moled me into a better athlete and a better person, and I'll miss him!

VERY VERY SAD NEWS>>
I remember Terry the athlete, a consistently high achieving and versatile endurance runner; Terry the coach, a very dedicated, caring and committed coach and mentor; Terry the friend, quiet, patient, loyal and steadfast. Over the years I have been privileged to have known him and shared the love of coaching and our sport.
Athletics Canada has lost a terrific coach and his athletes and family are sorely going to miss a great guy with a big heart !

Terry you are forever in our hearts and memories.

As a parent of one of Terry's athletes, I saw firsthand the special contribution of his leadership, patience and guidance. Our son Jordan thought very highly of his coach, who will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

I also worked with Terry at the Region of Waterloo. I moved on and so did Terry but we kept in touch. In fact, I chatted with him only a few weeks ago, he told me how much he was enjoying his work at the University of Waterloo. It is Terry's sense of humour that I will always remember- for this reason I'm attaching a picture of him in 2001 - we were the 'Data Geeks' for a Public Health presentation. The coat, the glasses, and yes, the pen protectors, were his idea- I will miss him.

My heart goes out to his entire family.

I am so shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of my good friend Terry. Terry helped me turn my health around and kindle my love for running. I am honoured to have known Terry as a colleague at the Region of Waterloo, a running mate and most of all a friend.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Terry's family and friends.
