Walter Bick Obituary

WALTER BICK May 19, 1917 - October 17, 2011 JEANNY BICK July 8, 1917 - September 24, 2001 Walter and Jeanny survived the horrors of the Holocaust by posing as Christian farmers - they were neither Christian nor farmers - but that was the only way they could get into Canada in 1939. They put heart and muscle into their 160-acre-farm next to what is now the Scarborough Town Centre. The farm was not only their refuge but became their salvation. A glut of cucumbers in 1944 presented a dilemma - plow them under or get creative. They got creative and Bick's Pickles was born. The barn turned into a factory and Bick's became a household name. Less than 30 years after arriving in Canada as refugees, Bick's was sold to Robin Hood Flour and Walter and Jeanny retired from business. They spent time travelling, skiing, hiking, collecting... but more than anything they actively sought out ways to help others. They were mentors to many, many people - young or old, friends or strangers. There is hardly a person who met them who was not touched by their generosity - their extraordinary generosity! In a more formal role, Walter and Jeanny worked with Canadian Civil Liberties Association, June Callwood's ground-breaking projects, Jewish Vocational Services, Weizmann Institute, ORT, Integra Foundation, Baycrest Foundation, Canadian Professors for Peace in the Middle East, Bezalel Academy of Art, Israel Museum, Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation and other organizations, above and below the radar. They took on each project with full commitment - just like the farm or Bick's Pickles - it was the only way they knew how to operate. Walter died at age 94 after suffering a stroke. Jeanny had succumbed to cancer ten years earlier. Walter and Jeanny had been married for 62 years - a marriage of deepest love, respect and mutual consideration. Through all the years whether on the farm, building Bick's Pickles, working with various organizations, they always worked together - that was their hallmark. The years since Jeanny died were tough for Walter - life just didn't have the same spark. Nonetheless, he was continually preoccupied with anticipating the needs of others. Right up until the end, coming in and out of delirium he would ask pertinent, incisive questions about people's welfare - what a fine example of how to live a life. Walter and Jeanny leave behind their four children - Catherene, Robert, Frances and Eric, thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family especially wishes to thank Sonam Choeden (Infinite Care Inc.) and her delicate and tireless staff - Nima, Dolma, Dolker, Namgyal, Kunchok and Choesang - for their exquisite loving-kindness as they cared for Walter over the last years. The family will sit Shiva at 44 Charles St. W., Apartment 519, from 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Hello family of Walter Bick,
My late father ( Godfried ( Frits ) Linnewiel was a very good chidhood friend of Walter Bick. They met in Amsterdam, before WW2 where they both lived at the time. My father always stayed in touch with Walter and has visited him in Montreal and they met many times in Switzerland during wintersport.

I had the priviledge of knowing Jeanny and Walter Bick in Switzerland through my parents with whom they were friends. I keep a very dear memory of them and of their warm and cheerful attitude. And Walter was such a marvellous storyteller!

I never had the chance to meet them, however, if you ever went on the subway, you would cross the plant on the rail, if you looked down you would see the big pickle vats, and the smell of the pickles were everywhere.

I visited the Bicks many years ago while I was teaching at York Univesity and Frances was one of my students. Both Walter and Jeanny were wonderful to be with and both had great stories about their lives, the pickle business and their love of art. They had a particular love of the works of Paul Klee and had numerous originals by that artist. I remember it was in the early 1970's that I visited with them and walter mentioning that he would bicycle at least five miles a day. I asked him where he would go and he smiled and pointed to a stationary exercise bicycle in the corner. Both he and jeanny had a long and wonderful life and it is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I remember them and their family. Deli Sacilotto

Dear Frances,
I was sorry to hear of your father's passing. You may not remember me. I was at the National Ballet School with you. I, too, have lost a parent. Though one never totally understands what people go through, I do sympathize and send heart-felt condolences to you. I am sorry this is so late, but I did not know until today. I hope life has been kind.

I DID NOT KNOW THESE FINE FOLKS...BUT UPON READING THE OBIT I HAVE TO WRITE... IF EVERYONE WOULD BE AS GIVING AND GENEROUS AS THESE PEOPLE, IT WOULD BE A GREATER WORLD. THERE IS SO MUCH HATE AND ANGER IN THE WORLD TODAY IT WOULD DISSAPPEAR IF WE ALL DID AS THESE WONDERFUL FOLKS DID. MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.

Dear Francie: We read about the passing of your father in the Canadian Jewish News and I feel very honoured to have known your family. I met you at Camp White Pine in 1959 and have fond memories of visiting you on your farm during Easter vacations. I remember playing in the factory when it was closed and on the empty school buses that were parked there with a litter of puppies that were born there. And I remember your parents driving you into Kitchener for visits at our house. I'd be happy to hear from you again after all these years gone by. Sincerely, Myrna Singer(Levene) Waterloo, Ontario

I first met Walter in the fall of 2001. During subsequent meetings, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his stories about family, business and travel; I know that I learned some valuable lessons from him as well. His knowledge, determination and generosity was nothing short of admirable. He will be missed!
My condolences to the family.

Dear Catherine, Robby, Frances and Eric,

It is with great sadness to hear about Walter. I have incredible memories of my youth spending Thanksgiving dinners with the Bick Family, eating Jeanny's amazing cooking and Walters discussions about life as we walked amongst the leaves on their property.

The warmest people I have ever met, warm, gentle, generous and lived life to its fullest. I can hear the music boxes playing and see the Netsuke collection like it was yesterday. I will light a candle with the Netsuke Bicks gave me for my 16th Birthday. You will be missed and remain in my heart forever. With love, Susie Brown from Vancouver BC (Burke and Laurie Brown's daughter)

Condolences to the family we knew so well when we were all young. Jeanny was my Mom's best friend and Bart, my brother had one of his first jobs in the pickle factory. Our families shared dentists and Janny Danny's who passed away in 2009. Ineke Waterman passed away in 2006 at age 91 and Dick Waterman passed away at 87 in 2007. Like Walter he could not see living without his spark either. Your tribute Walter and Jeanny was wonderful to see and may the joy of their lives lessen the pain of your loss.

My deepest condolences to the Bick Family. I am so saddened to hear this news. I met Walter a few years ago on a plane from Europe to Canada and we kept in touch regularly. He also came to visit in Italy a few times. He was a very special man and so caring. Every time he called he'd ask about my children and what they were up to. How our business was going. He will be greatly missed. His life and how he lived it is an inspiration to all who knew him.

I had the honour of a wonderful breakfast with Walter several years ago. The best few hours I can remember spending in a long time. His past was brought to life by the stories he told me. A wonderful human being.

I didn't know Walter or Jeanny. When I do irregularly read the newspaper I will look to see if anyone I know has passed on and often interesting lives are expressed in the notices of folks I don't even know. The notice caught my eye. What a great picture. Thank you Walter for the pickles.

Walter adores life and people. He tries to help everyone around him who is in need. Walter was the kindest man I have ever met. I told him one day Walter “there is no other Walter; the universe has threw away the recipe after created you! He laughs.
Affectionately,
