WILLIAM H. GARTON After a happy, fulfilling life, and in the loving presence of his family, Bill passed away in his 90th year at Oakville-Trafalgar Hospital on April 2, 2013. Devoted husband to Nancy (MCClure) for 66 years, and beloved father of Bob (Susan Evans) and Pat (David Venus). Cherished Papa of Brian Garton, Kevin Venus (Chelsea Cummings), and Graham Venus. Predeceased by his parents, Laura and John Garton, brother Jack, and sister, Dorothy (Kennedy). Fondly remembered by his niece, Anne Kennedy (Nick Bereznick). An RCAF veteran from WWII, Bill served as a Sergeant in the Transport Corps where he was stationed in the Maritimes and in Europe for three years. Following the war, Bill began his thirty-eight year career in education, which included teaching at elementary, high school and university levels. Bill began his teaching career in East York, but soon moved to Etobicoke where he was an elementary school principal and later Superintendent of Personnel and Supervisory Services for the Etobicoke Board of Education. During this time he was also President of the Etobicoke Public Schools Principal's Association, a member of York University's Faculty of Education's Advisory Council, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Canadian League of Exchange Teachers. A skilled and respected collective agreement negotiator, Bill later acted on arbitrations and as an advisor to school boards. In retirement, Bill and Nancy were fortunate to travel extensively and to spend leisure time with family and friends at their cottage, or on the golf course. In addition, Bill served on the Board of the Ennisclaire Condominium Association, was a member of the Probus Club, was an elder and longstanding member of Islington United Church, and a charter member of the first international chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. We will deeply miss Bill: his generosity of spirit, jovial humour, integrity and grace.
