Yvonne Meehan Obituary

YVONNE EILEEN (MOHAN) MEEHAN September 11, 1931 - July 31, 2011 Yvonne Eileen Meehan passed away peacefully Sunday, having led an exemplary life of work, devotion and service to Christ, her family and her profession. Her death at Sunnybrook Hospital follows a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Toronto with her 9 siblings, Yvonne graduated as an R.N. from St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. Following post-graduate studies in Orthopaedic Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, in 1955 she returned to Toronto as Operating Room Supervisor in the newly established Orthopaedic & Arthritic Hospital. Recertifying in 1980, she pioneered their new Chiropody Clinic, serving until her retirement in 1995. In 1965, she married Dr. Joseph E. Meehan, a family doctor, with whom she raised six children born between 1966 and 1973: Peter (Laura), Joseph (Margot), Anne Marie (Bruce Olsen), Thomas, Paul (Melissa) and Michael (Stephanie). Grandma will be profoundly missed by grandchildren Peter, Bridget, Claire, Katherine, Joseph, Ryan, Rory, Olivia and Elliot. Grandma eagerly awaited the safe arrival of her latest grandchild August 2. Yvonne is predeceased by husband Joe (deceased 1987), parents Peter and Anne Mohan and siblings John, Elizabeth, Margaret and Bill. She is survived by siblings Peter Jr., Molly, Reverend Thomas F. Mohan, CSB, Michael and Patricia. Deeply missed by sisters-in-law Marie, Margaret and Lucy. Mom deeply believed the tenets of her faith, which she ceaselessly applied - raising her children, caring for her patients and loving her several dozen nieces and nephews. She was our model and our inspiration, guiding us to happy and fulfilling lives. Mom taught us the importance of doing our best at whatever task we embarked upon -- and taking the time to celebrate the joy of family and the life we are given. She remains the centre of our world. The family will receive family and friends at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. W. (2 stoplights west of Yonge St.) on Wednesday, August 3rd 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 4th 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 5th at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 24 Cheritan Ave., Toronto.
