MIEZITIS, Zigurds - October 3, 1933-October 6, 2011 Fondly known as "Zigi", passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A private family funeral was held on October 15, 2011 at St. James Crematorium Chapel. An aeronautical engineer (University of Toronto), retired Parkdale C.I. teacher, renowned Latvian folk dance choreographer, Zigi was an energetic, creative and inspiring leader remembered for his dedication to passing on the legacy of Latvian folk traditions through song and dance in Latvian communities worldwide. He will be greatly missed by his wife Solveiga Miezitis, his son Andris Miezitis, his daughters Ilze Matiss (Andris) and Dace Rungis (Dainis) and his grandchildren Emils and Marisa Matiss and Kaiva, Meta and Zile Rungis. A bilingual Memorial Service and tribute to Zigi's life will be held on Friday, October 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 383 Jarvis St., Toronto (corner of Jarvis and Carleton). In place of flowers, donations are welcome for Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre or The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, 1940-1991.
