Christopher Haney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 3 to Jun. 7, 2010.
CHRISTOPHER FREDERICK HANEY Passed away peacefully at the age of 59 on May 31, 2010 at 11:20 a.m. at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto after a lengthy illness in the presence of his wife Hiam and his brother John Haney. Chris is survived by the love of his life Hiam Bohsali, his companion and wife of twenty years, his three children Shelagh, Tom and John and John's partner Amanda. He will be missed by his sister Mary, brother John, John's wife Velvet and children Justine, Chloe, Garlande and David; Hiam's daughter Fetoun Reda and her nephew Brooks Nesbitt and by her sisters Fetoun and Cookie and her brother Walid and all their families. Chris was born in Welland, Ontario and grew up in Cornwall, Saint John, New Brunswick and Hamilton. He is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Sheila Haney. He was a resident of Caledon, Ontario and spent the winter months in his beloved Spain. He was Photo Editor of The Gazette in Montreal when he and Scott Abbott, a Sports Editor at The Canadian Press Bureau in that city, collaborated on December 15, 1979, in the invention of the board game, which has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and spawned countless imitators since its general introduction to the market in 1982. He worked for the Canadian government on Prince Charles's 1975 arctic tour and for CP at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. He also set up photo coverage of the 1976 Olympic Summer Games. He and Scott founded Horn Abbot Limited with two other partners, Chris's brother John and Edward Werner, at the time a St. Catharines, Ontario lawyer, Chris loved golf and developed two world-class courses in Caledon, Ontario. The Devil's Pulpit course opened in 1990 and the Devil's Paintbrush in 1992. Donations friends want to make in Christopher's name should be to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. In accordance with Chris's wishes and those of his wife Hiam, close friends and family will soon gather to celebrate his amazing life. Chris lived life fast and hard, leaving in his wake Trivial Pursuit and two spectacular golf courses, monumental accomplishments that are a testament to one of the most creative individuals Canada has ever witnessed. 'My My, Hey Hey,' as Neil Young wrote, 'Better to burn out than to fade away.' May he finally rest in peace.

To John and Velvet,
I am SO sorry to hear of this loss. I remember meeting Chris at your wedding. After losing my sister at 55 last October, I can really relate. Siblings are the keepers of your childhood memories. May those memories keep you in safe harbor.
