ROSE JULIA FAREWELL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rose Julia Farewell, the beloved wife of Harley Elgin (Al) Farewell for sixty-eight years and loving mother of Michael (Alfred), Julia Anne, John (Claudia), Elgin (Lisa) and Mary Rose Bouwman (Harry). Rose was a doting Grammie to Thomas (Alanna), Cynthia (Jeffrey), Daniel, Luke, Emily, Julia, William and Olivia and proud great-Grammie to Reilly and Bryce. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond. After a long and courageous struggle with complications from chronic asthma, Rose passed away in her 89th year on March 9, 2014 during a brief stay at Ajax Pickering Hospital. Rose was born "down home" in Moncton, New Brunswick, the daughter of John and Jesse Owens and she was one of eight children (Annabelle, Bill, Lillian, Mary, Charlie, Ester and is survived by her younger brother, Jimmy Owens (Joyce) who resides in Kelowna, British Columbia). A lifelong romance began when Rose and Al met during World War II in Moncton while Al was serving in the RCAF. They raised their family in Oshawa and Midland and settled in Whitby in 1967. Rose started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in rural New Brunswick. She was highly respected as a teacher in Midland and Whitby. For over 40 years Rose volunteered with various organizations, especially the Good Luck Shop for Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Through her life, Rose enjoyed many interests such as crocheting, knitting, reading, entertaining, cottage life, bird watching, line dancing and baking. Rose has survived many of her dearest friends and will be missed by those that remain. The Farewell family greatly appreciate the support provided to Rose by her care providers and thanks especially Lynn for her loving care.
