DR. ANDREW FRIERI January 11, 1925, Cairano, Avellino, Italy - March 17, 2014, Thornhill, Ontario Suddenly but peacefully at home. Beloved husband of Betty for over 51 years. Much loved Papa of Maria and her husband Joe and Liza and her husband Nyima. Dear Nonno of Darius and Iona. Predeceased by his brother Gaetano. Fondly remembered by brother-in-law Jim, several nieces and nephews, and family in Italy (Rosetta, Annamaria, Roberto and Marilla). A doctor in Italy, he wanted to leave socialized medicine and applied to immigrate to several countries. He heard back from Canada first and so came here in 1958, speaking no English. He had to repeat his residency and completed his first year in Toronto and his second year at St. Joseph's in Hamilton, where he met Betty, an ER Nurse. Dr. Frieri started his private practice in 1961, serving many in the Italian community, first on Caledonia Road, then on Wilson Avenue. Although you were never seen on time, you were always well cared for. He loved being a doctor and retired a few months after his 80th birthday, still making house calls to his elderly patients. After retirement he suffered a variety of health issues, including a heart attack, pacemaker insertion, bladder cancer and dementia. Our mother has been his selfless and devoted caregiver for many years. The family wishes to thank the Thornhill D.A.Y. Centre, the Geriatric Clinic at Mackenzie Health, Dr. M. Kogon and his caregivers Norma and Michael. Deep gratitude to Dr. Whitney for her many years of gentle and loving care. Friends may call on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd (21 Simonston Blvd.). Flowers gratefully declined. To remember Dr. Frieri, the family would appreciate donations to the or the Alzheimer Society. Condolences www.rskane.ca
