DEAN, Denis Arthur - September 10, 1923 - March 23, 2014 It is with great sadness that the Dean family announces the passing of our beloved Denis, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, on March 23, 2014 at the age of 90. Dad lived an amazing, active and rich life, filled with happiness and wonderful family, first in London, England and then in Canada. Dad was born in Croydon, England in 1923 to the late Arthur and Kathleen Dean and became an RAF pilot and flight instructor in the latter part of World War II. During the War and immediately thereafter, he worked in London for Royal Dutch Shell, ultimately moving to the Canadian operations in 1964. Following a 35-year career at Shell, Dad took on increasingly senior positions with Petro-Canada, the Ontario Energy Board and the Ontario Natural Gas Association. He also worked for Federal Minister Alastair Gillespie in Energy, Mines and Resources, crafting the emergency crude-oil allocation response plan for future oil crises following the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. Dad had many loves, including politics, music, reading, astronomy, history, art, flying, travel, writing and gardening. None, however, matched the love he shared with his late wife, Barbara Ann, who died in 2013 after 44 years together. He and Barbie had two children, Adam (Alexis) and Michelle (Martyn), who in turn anointed him "Papa" with the arrival of five grandchildren, Hudson, Ryder, Beckett, Ella and Austin, whom he adored. Dad also had three wonderful children from his prior marriage, Nicholas, Simon (Wendy) and Amanda (Gerry), all of whom were the children of the late Kathleen Dean (nee Bodger) in 1976. Dad became a grandfather with the arrival of their six children, Evan, Rachael, Nick (Becky), Christian (Melissa), Ryan (Cassandra) and Brennan (Natalie). In turn, their own four adorable children made Dad a very proud great-grandfather. Very tragically, Dad lost his eldest granddaughter, Rachael, in 1993, and missed her dearly until his very last breath. Dad is survived by his brother, Vernon (Margery) and sister-in-law, Francie Berkoff. He was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia, and brothers, George and Desmond. The Dean family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care who ensured Dad's final months were as comfortable as possible and helped honour his wish to be at home until the end. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Ave. West (3 lights west of Dufferin) for service on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Temple Sinai Section of Lambton Cemetery (on Royal York Rd., south of Eglinton). Shiva will be held at the family home (31 Hopperton Dr.), commencing on Tuesday, March 25 following the funeral and concluding on Monday, March 31. Memorial donations may be made to The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, 416-586-8203.
