GEORGE ALTAMONT BROWN Peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at North York General Hospital. George, beloved husband of Iris, the love of her life for over 53 years. He is survived by his sisters Ada and Daphne and brother Kenneth. Predeceased by his sister Inez and brothers Dudley, Harry and Archie. Dear uncle of Trisha and Winston. George will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all of his nieces, nephews, family and many friends. Those who knew George will remember his great strength of character, his integrity, his generosity and his social conscience. After leaving his homeland, Jamaica, for Canada, George studied at University of British Columbia, Carleton University in Ottawa and the University of Toronto graduating with Masters Degrees in Economics, Public administration and Social Work. His passion to improve the living conditions in Jamaica compelled him to return to Jamaica in 1962. From 1962 - 1966, he worked at the Central Planning Unit, the Development Finance Corporation and as the Assistant Administrator of the University of the West Indies Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. George's love of Canada drew him back to Canada in 1966. His Jamaican work experience coupled with his wide educational background served him well in his capacity as Executive Director of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. He had strong convictions about the basic rights of people from all walks of life. Consequently, his work at the Ontario Human Rights Commission afforded him the opportunity to follow his dreams of making the world a better place. After leaving the Commission, George was a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board. George took great pleasure from reading many newspapers and books, listening to good music including classical music and dancing the night away. On a weekly basis, he truly enjoyed playing dominoes with his domino buddies. Special thanks to Doctors Debra Birnbaum, Joseph Ricci, Sami Marqus and Jonanthan Chan for their excellent and compassionate care of George. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 21st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment to follow at York Cemetery. Your sympathy can be expressed by a memorial donation to the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada, 306 - 901 Lawrence Ave. West, Toronto, ON M6A 1C3. Condolences www.rskane.ca
