PAUL ERICH SCHMELZER 1930 - 2014 Beloved husband for 58 years to Liselotte (nee Voegeding), father of Howard (Deborah), Dennis (Suzanne) and grandfather to Ryan, Leigh-Anne and Olivia . We sadly announce the passing of Paul Schmelzer on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in his 84th year. Paul was raised in West Germany but was welcomed to Canada in 1954 where his first job was washing dishes in a Barrie hotel. He admitted it was boring but he knew with his work ethic and the opportunities available in his adopted new country that it would only be temporary. It wasn't long before Paul and Liselotte opened their own business "Paul's Auto Repair" on Adelaide St. in Toronto and they never looked back. A shrewd businessman, Paul recognized a good thing when he saw it and in 1960 opened a Peugeot franchise, establishing Centre Auto Collision. In 1974 Centre Honda was born, becoming the forerunner of one of Honda Canada's most successful and respected Honda dealerships. Paul continued to manage his business together with his two sons until recently. Paul was an eclectic hobbyist and would enjoy weekends at the cottage boating with his family, winemaking, hunting and fishing with his friends and beekeeping on his farm. Never one to turn down a challenge, he proudly earned his pilot licence well into his fifties. He will be missed by all who knew him and had the opportunity to work with him. Visitation will be at the McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Rd., Ajax (905-428-8488), on Monday, June 2, 2014 between 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with the Funeral Service in the Chapel on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Duffin Meadows Cemetery.
