SIMONASSI, Lino - Passed away suddenly at home after a long and very courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the age of 72. Beloved husband for a wonderful 35 years to the love of his life, Ulla. Father to his accomplished sons John and Michael and uncle to Dean, Deanna and Lee. Sorely missed by his in-laws Robert and Svea Svensson and his brother-in- law Jan and sister-in-law Pam. Lino was predeceased by his older brother Lelio and leaves behind many friends, family and colleagues over the span of a very rich and vibrant life in the hospitality industry. He had the great joy and privilege to have a second career at Centennial College, 2008 to 2011. He was a much beloved and respected professor and mentored many future hospitality prodigies. Lino was born in Italy, orphaned at a young age but had an inner calling and attended hotel school in his home country garnering top grades. He worked in hotels and restaurants in Jersey, Channel Islands and Frankfurt, Germany. Immigrating to Canada in 1968 he joined his brother and family to start a new chapter in his life. He graduated with top honours from Ryerson University in 1974 with a degree in Hotel and Tourism Management. His career then blossomed at the Prince Hotel in Toronto where he remained for over 30 years as Director of Catering with a loyal following. Lino battled cancer for an unprecedented 11 years from his initial diagnosis in 2003. He beat the odds innumerable times with his fierce will to live and the love of his family. Doctors repeatedly called him the "miracle man." And he truly was to his family and friends. Lino was a kind, intelligent and loving man who treasured his sons, his very special nephew Lee, his wife and all his family here in Canada and Italy. He lived his life fully and with passion. Lino made a difference and he enriched many lives by his mere presence. He was a class act and not many will measure up to his accomplishments and joy of living. He will be sorely missed but always remembered, honoured and loved for the wonderful father, husband, uncle and inspiring colleague that he proved to be for all his life. Cremation has taken place and there is no funeral service. Memorial visitations will take place at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Avenue, Markham, 4 lights north of Highway 7, 905-305-8508, on Saturday, June 7th from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the would be appreciated by the family.
