G. ROMOLA TAYLOR Gwendolyn Romola Winnifred Taylor (nee Girvin) passed away peacefully on June 8, 2014. Beloved wife of the late Arthur Roland Taylor and loving mother of Melissa Ellen Taylor (Patrick Rodrigues), cherished aunt to Robert and Charlie Witherell, Pam Goring (Murray), Barbara and Joan Taylor, Eleanor Rimmer, Brian Carter (Debbie) and grandniece Renee Gerlitz and "Hawaiian" cousins, the Slaters. Romola was born in Strathmore, Alberta January 11, 1917 to Dr. Alfred Weller Girvin and his wife Nellie Melissa (nee Morris). She is predeceased by her sister Evangeline Lillian Carter (1988) and brother William Lorne Whittier Girvin (1984). A graduate of Queen's University and Toronto General Hospital (1945), Romola remembered her nursing classmates with greatest fondness. From a prominent family, her father died of TB in the Depression and with few possessions the family drove east so the girls could attend university. Romola opted for nursing to join the war effort but graduated at war's end. Having lost many friends Romola, with her mother, bought a small summer hotel, The Alpine Inn, in Fenelon Falls. It was there she met Arthur Taylor whom she married in 1951 and with him enjoyed the best decade of her life, travelling the continent, wintering in Miami and running the popular Inn. To their surprise in 1960 a daughter arrived to change their lives. In 1966, Arthur died and Romola found herself raising a child on her own. In 1971 she returned to Toronto and made Willowdale her home. She loved her garden, treasured her neighborhood friends and the Granite Club, especially when playing bridge. Her little Bunty was at her side every day until the end. A natural competitor, she loved tennis and baseball. A born teacher and philosopher her greatest challenge and joy was being a mother. Best friends, Romola and Melissa were a "great team" and faced many of life's challenges together. Friends and family are welcome to celebrate Romola's life on Friday, June 13th at 2 p.m. at Morley Bedford Funeral Home Chapel, 159 Eglinton Ave. West (2 lights west of Yonge St.). In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
