GORDON, Irene (nee Nieminen) - March 19, 1928 - June 16, 2014 Irene passed peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga at the age of 86. Beloved wife of John for 55 years; mother of Lynn Hallson (Richard) and Steve (Catherine); grandmother of Jennifer and Kate; sister to Eric (Raymond) and Arnold (Vi); and favourite aunt of several nieces and nephews. Born in Rouyn, Quebec, Irene grew up there and in nearby Noranda, where she met her husband John. They moved to Saskatoon with their children in 1967 and she and John moved to Mississauga in 1982, where they rekindled old friendships and made many new ones. Irene was interested in all sports from an early age but particularly tennis, basketball, badminton, bowling and skiing, both downhill and cross-country. In addition to being an avid participant, she also coached youth tennis, youth basketball and was an instructor for visually impaired cross-country skiers. While challenged by Alzheimer's in her later years, her kind disposition and deeply engrained thoughtfulness prevailed throughout her life. Her love of laughter and great sense of humour will be missed but fondly remembered. A private family burial will take place at Springcreek Cemetery. Friends may attend a reception at the Turner & Porter "Neweduk - Erin Mills" Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga (just east of Erin Mills Pkwy.), on Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca
