Del NEWBIGGING Obituary

NEWBIGGING, Del - Del died with family at his bedside at Toronto's Princess Margaret Hospital on August 23, 2012 after a battle with cancer. Beloved husband of John Carolan, loving father of Martha (Debbie) and Joey (Andrea), proud grandpa of Owen and Simon, dear friend of Eva Ardiel. He will be missed by his large, loving Irish family and by his siblings, nieces and nephews in Ontario. Del was a teacher of visual arts for 35 years. On retirement from teaching he devoted his life to creating art. In 2001, along with Dora de Pedery-Hunt and several other artists, he founded the Medallic Art Society of Canada (MASC). In 2005 he created the monument to Alexander Wood that sits at the corner of Alexander and Church Streets in Toronto. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Del's life will be held at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. on what would have been his 78th birthday. I am now 65 and took too long to tell Del how influential he is in my life. At Mayfield SS, 1971?. Damn. I'd skip classes and do a double art with him. He was tough, discerning and a tender force with humour to be reckoned with and I loved the way he challenged the administration. So memorable for me . My best, Em

I remember meeting Del and working diligently with him on the founding of MASC. He worked hard at educating the masses about the fine art of the art medal and that I commend. Rest in peace and rise in glory!

So sorry to hear of Del Newbigging's passing. I took a
medallion making course at his house with he and his partner, John, and was very inspired by his love of teaching. He will be missed, especially with the MASC Association that he began.

It makes me so very sad sorry to hear of the end for Del. I always appreciated his advice and encouragements and feel fortunate to have known him and able to count him as one of my dear friends for all the years from the first time we met at the Trout Run Medallic Workshop near St. Mary's PA in the 1990s.
I'm so sorry to loose such a valuable friend as Del and want to extend my sympathies to John and to Del's family for the loss of such a kind and talented person. He was such a supporter of medallic art as one of the original founders of MASC after beeing a member and supporter of AMSA for years.
