MORRISON, Mabel Amelia (nee Burton) - With great regret and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mabel on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Wynfield Residence, in her 98th year (although she stopped adding years after 88). The beloved wife of the late Fred for 60 years and the devoted and proud mother and mother-in-law of Paul and Lynn (Stott) and Susie and Jeremy (Williams). Special Grandma of Lee and Erin (Ian Crow) and Great-grandmother of Seth, Caylee and Leif. Mabel was a person who accepted any challenges that came her way, and remained positive, honest and above all, resourceful and self-reliant. She was never afraid of working hard, even as a teenager, when she worked on the Speck farm in Clarkson with her mother, who cooked for the pickers. Mabel was able to find employment all throughout the Great Depression, and later worked at Index Cards, behind the counter at Ryan's Smoke and Gift Shop, and at the printing department at the Bank of Nova Scotia. As an only child, she was vigilant in caring for her mother, which included taking her on vacation and hiding her in the bushes at the side of the road until she could hitch a ride for them both. Throughout her life, Mabel never hesitated to open her home to those who needed one. She and Fred built up their beloved cottage on Morrison Lake, which was the setting for many gatherings of family and friends, card tournaments, boat rides and bonfires. Mabel could never refuse a game of cribbage, which she usually won, and was an avid bowler. Mabel lived her life with gusto, and exhibited a strength of will that kept her walking and dancing until her final few days. The family greatly appreciates the care and kindness she received from the dedicated staff at Wynfield. The family will receive friends at the Sherrin Funeral Home, 873 Kingston Rd., Toronto on Thursday, November 8 between 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will also be held there at 11 a.m. Friday, November 9. Flowers welcome or memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
