GIANOU, Philip - It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Philip Gianou, on January 4, 2013 at Sunnybrook Hospital, at the age of 92. With his family by his bedside he peacefully decided to move on to eternal days of comfort and tranquility. The previous day marked Philip's 60th year of unconditional love to his beloved Tomka (Tina). He was and always will be the patriach of our family. Though stoic in nature, let it be said that his real true passion was his family. Hence, the measure of the man. More so, his compassionate and strong held views of justice and equality were an integral part of his being. A self made man, successful in the restaurant business on Yonge St. for decades, the Commerce at King Street and the Century at Yorkville (after all it's what Macedonians did well), Philip arrived from war-torn Zhelevo, Greece in the early 50's. A proud Veteran of WWll and the ensuing civil war, Philip chartered a new life in this land of opportunity. He and Tomka had two boys, Peter (Katy) and Chris. More importantly, the loves of his life were his grandsons Nick (Janae) and Andrew. And they, in turn, deeply loved their "DedoBaba". He very much, through his wisdom and guidance, helped make them the wonderful young men before us today. And our great blessing was the arrival, this last summer, of Andrew Philip a.k.a. Drew, Philip's first and precious great-grandson! Philip is predeceased by sister Reena from Greece and leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. We know Dedo that in your new title, as our angel, we will all be well watched over (some things never change). Many thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at Sunnybrook and to the gracious tribute from the Sunnybrook Veterans for their departed brother. "Sunrise doesn't last all morning.., A cloudburst doesn't last all day." Visitation will be held at MOUNT PLEASANT CEMETERY VISITATION CENTRE, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, (east gate entrance) Toronto, 416-485-5572, on Sunday, January 6 from 7-9 p.m., Monday, January 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service at the Visitation Centre on Tuesday, January 8 at 12 noon. In Philip's memory, donations may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation. For online condolences and further details, please visit www.etouch.ca
