Jules PAIVIO Obituary

PAIVIO, Jules Peter - April 29, 1917 - September 4, 2013 Passed away peacefully in his sleep in his 97th year in Aurora, Ontario. Predeceased by his wife Adele, partner Violet Jouppi, daughter Marilyn, son Ronald. Survived by sons Martin (Debbie) and Allan (Suzanne), grandchildren Kirsti (Carl), Katrina (Dominic), Maija- Liisa, Pentti, Kari and Julian Sol, and great-grandchildren Hayden, Noah and Connor, brother Allan (Dolores), and many nieces and nephews. Jules devoted his entire life to peace and humanitarian causes, at 19 fought in Spain with the International Brigade against fascism. He was the last living member of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion and was honoured with full Spanish citizenship. He served in the Canadian Army in the Second World War then graduated from the University of Toronto in Architecture in 1952. He became a professor and administrator at Ryerson from 1961-81. Upon retirement he continued his dedication to various community, environmental and political causes. A celebration of his life will be held in Aurora on September 14th at Oakland Hall Restaurant and September 28th in Sudbury at Finlandia Koti.
