John and his wife Jean took me into their home when I was a lost teenager in 1962. Though I stayed only a few months, I kept in touch with them for more than 50 years. John inspired me and I felt honoured to have known him. The last time I saw him he sincerely apologized for not understanding me better when I was a troubled youth. I was deeply touched. He was a sensitive and caring man and I am sorry I will not have a chance to chat with him again.

John, you taught me more than sociology. You taught me self-efficacy, respect, and integrity. Thank you for recognizing and reaching out. Your contributions to our community, education, and the individual lives go well beyond...roots and wings.
