VAIL, Helen Phyllis (nee Young) - After a strong struggle with cancer, passed peacefully with family away on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the age of 87 at The Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, ON. Predeceased by her cherished husband Roy Keith Vail (1995). Loving mother to Derek, Valerie, (Graham) Philip, mother-in-law to Vanessa. Grandmother to Angie (Todd), Jamie (Sharlene), Sarah (Maurice), as well as her eight special great-grandchildren. As per Mom's wishes, private cremation has taken place in Burlington, ON and interment will take place at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Pointe Claire, QC, next to her beloved husband on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. A small celebration of Phyllis' life will take place at the graveside at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the foundation started by Phyllis in the name of Young Vail Foundation, which supports the following charitable organizations: Beaconsfield United Church, The Salvation Army Hamilton, Canadian Cancer Society, Arthritis Society, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, Children's Wish Foundation, Alzheimer Society of Toronto and Operation Smile. Phyllis was born in Scotsburn, NS on January 9, 1927. Lived in Annapolis Valley, NS, went to Halifax, NS to work for Maritime Telephone. Met Keith at Halifax United Church. Married on September 2, 1950, transferred to Montreal with Keith for Alcan in the 1950s and then to Saguenay and on to Beaconsfield, QC. Phyllis beat breast cancer in the early 1970s, survived the Quebec ice storm in 1996 and then Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A dedicated volunteer at Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe Claire, QC, as well as on the foundation for 25 years and a follow up volunteer at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington for 10 years after moving to Burlington, ON. Phyllis cared for all, family, friends, or strangers always with a smile on her face and a hand to help. May God treat her well.
