Sister Susan MORAN, O.L.M.

Suddenly on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Residence of Our Lady's Missionaries. Sister Susan was born in Montreal to her beloved parents Thomas and Kathleen Moran (nee O'Connell). She was raised in Toronto and studied at Loretto Abbey and Toronto Teacher's College. After teaching in Toronto for a few years she entered Our Lady's Missionaries in 1963. She continued to teach in Toronto and worked as a Pastoral Minister at St. Michael's College School which led to her co-founding the Out of the Cold program. Sister Susan obtained her Masters in Theological Studies at St. Augustine's College. She was also awarded the Order of Canada and received many recognitions for her work with the homeless, to whom she devoted her love and her life. Sister Susan will be sadly missed by her sister Maureen (Michael Eustace) and her brother Dan (Karen Moran). Loving aunt of Mary Jo, DeeDee, Michael, Liz, Ed and Paul and 12 great-nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the Residence of Our Lady's Missionaries, 2 Leander Court, on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:30-8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Scarborough Mission Chapel, 2685 Kingston Road. Interment to be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Donations to The Out of the Cold in your faith community would be appreciated as your expression of sympathy.

In a life story that Sister Susan wrote sometime in 1995, she said: We are blessed by God to share our lives with the poor here in Toronto, and throughout the world. Even in her own struggles with pain, Sister Susan found time to comfort the poor and the suffering; indeed, in they became her new brothers and sisters as she began her ministry with Out of the Cold.
Love, compassion, and friendshipthese were the gifts she shared.

My memory of the first time I met Sister Susan is a vivid picture of her greeting me warmly at the Mother house on Clarendon Ave and then of her rushing to make a fire in the fireplace. That occasion has become for me a mental metaphor of all the hearts she warmed with her humble thoughtful kindness as she initiated and worked with the Out Of The Cold program in Toronto. Rosaire joins me in expressing our sincere sympathy to the Sisters of OLM and to Sister Susan's family.

Sister Sue was a street nun totally focused on helping the poor and homeless of our city. She was one of Toronto's foremost advocates of the poor. Her work for Out of the Cold will long be remembered. Rest in peace Sister Sue. Job well done.

I have thought of Sister Sue often over last 45 years. She was my favorite teacher (grade 8), lived with other nuns on our street which was so neat. Even at that young age, I knew that she was a saint on earth - I heard her name on the radio this morning and just knew it was her. She was planning to work with development challenged young people in France with Gov. General Vanier's brother and I never knew what happened to her after that. She instilled in me(us) a real sense of social justice - took us to help serve at the Scott Missions. Really it was her that made God seem real and current in my life. To this day she ranks as one of the greatest heros in my life and I haven't seen nor heard of her since grade 8!! Bless her and her family - thank you for helping to shape most of the better parts of me.

A dear friend and tireless advocate for people facing tough times. She often reminded us all that when we get together in service we are really just sharing each others gifts. Susan was also dedicated and deeply interested in the companions of her order and her own personal family. Driven by love with smatterings of tenacity and good humour, she is sorely missed.
