Alvin Peter Friesen, 96, passed away Saturday, June 29 at his home in Saskatoon. Al was born March 25, 1917 to Peter and Marie Friesen, the oldest of 11 children. Al served in the army in WWII as a medic. Following the war, he returned home and was married in 1946 to Val Kruger. After the untimely death of his wife in 1987, Al was remarried to Louise Ewert in 1992. In 1947, Al graduated from the U of S with a degree in Pharmacy, that launched a long term career of entrepreneurship and management. After working at pharmacies in Swift Current and Prince Albert, he opened his own pharmacy in Wakaw in 1952, where he and his family stayed until 1965, when they sold the business and moved to Saskatoon. After managing several pharmacies for the Pinders chain, he again went into business on his own purchasing a pharmacy in Regina in 1969 where he lived until his retirement in 1990. Al was always a well-liked and respected member of the community. At various times he was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and a passionate Roughrider supporter. His singing voice was well known to his family and friends. He was a soloist in the United Church Choir in Wakaw and was involved in Barber Shop singing with the Chimo Chordsmen through a good portion of his retirement years. Al is survived by his wife Louise; three children, Rick (Marg), Terry and Joni (George); 2 stepchildren, Geryl (Ken) and Glenis (Garry), daughter-in-law Susan (Raj); 8 brothers and sisters and numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. A Celebration of Al's Life will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, first right past Briargate Rd.) with interment and reception to follow.
