Bas was a lover of life, a flier, a gentleman. He finished high school in Carnduff and after some years of helping his parents in their business, joined the Air Force, assured by the local recruiters it wouldn't last long - a few months. He earned his 'wings' in 1942. Bas spent the war as a pilot and an instructor of gunners and bombardiers in England, returning to Carnduff in 1945. Prior to returning to Carnduff he met up with Mina in New York City and they decided to marry. This they did in 1946 and took over the family grocery store in Carnduff. Over the next twelve years they ran the store, a bakery and a truck line while Mina pursued her art degrees in Banff, Regina, Winnipeg and Michigan. Looking for a broader life, in 1959 they sold the businesses in Carnduff and left for Vancouver where both attended the University of BC. Over the next years they lived in Vancouver, Regina, Winnipeg and settled in Saskatoon in 1969, where Bas worked at Co-op Trust and Mina at the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Art and Art History. Over the years there was a close contact with the MacDonald family, including travel and many celebrations. Bas's full and vigorous life centered on Mina's art activity, especially after his retirement in 1980. He lost Mina in 1987 -a difficult time for Bas. In recent years his active engagement with theatre, music, family and friends kept him buoyant and enthusiastic - in love with his life and everything around him. He is sadly missed by his family, friends, and his cat - Rusty. Donations to the Mina Forsyth Scholarship Fund, University of Saskatchewan, Department of Art and Art History, would be welcomed.
