The family of Leo Louis Popiel, of The Sherbrooke Community Centre Veterans Village Saskatoon, and formerly of Tway Saskatchewan, is saddened to announce his passing on the evening of Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the age of 98.
Leo was predeceased by his parents John and Anna (nee Hnatiuk) Popiel; his loving wife Katherine (nee Squarek); brothers John Popiel (San Francisco CA), Peter Popiel (Palm Springs, CA), James (Katherine) Popiel (San Francisco CA), Julien (Mary) Popiel (Palm Springs CA); sisters Julianna Popiel (infancy), Victoria (Edward) Tabbert (Detroit MI), Estelle Maass (Desert Hot Springs CA), and niece Jestine Osborn (Desert Hot Springs CA).
Leo was born on the family farm near Tway Saskatchewan on December 7, 1914 the eldest of nine children, where he would grow up and eventually farm until his early 90s. He served in the Canadian military during WWII
from 1942-45, married in 1947, and returned to the family farm in 1948. In addition to all aspects of farming, Leo's interests were numerous and varied. He was mechanically inclined as well, and through the years found no shortage of repairs and innovations required on the farm. He held certificates in welding, electrical, photography and fish farming (earned at the U of S in his mid 70s). Leo's favourite pastimes were reading, and dancing which he most enjoyed up until his ninth decade.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter Catherine (Lyle) Bessette (Edmonton AB); granddaughters, Katherine and Elizabeth; his son Leon (Mary) Popiel (Sherwood Park AB); granddaughter Katelin and grandson Leo William (his namesake); sister Irene Gonta (MI); and many nieces, nephews, their families; and friends.
A memorial service officiated by Father Vladimir Kolpakov and reception will be held at the Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave N) on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:00 pm, with a private interment to follow at a later date. It is the family's wish that in lieu of flowers a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association (104-2301 Ave C N Saskatoon, SK S7L 5X5) or to the charity of choice be considered.
