FRED CENAIKO Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on May 7, 2012.
CENAIKO, Dr. Fred
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Fred Cenaiko announces his passing at the age of 86. He died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 4, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife Helen of 62 years, sons David (Bev), Lloyd (Ulyana), Harvey (Cheryl), daughter Ruth and 13 grandchildren, Chris, Daniel, Colin, Mark, Mia, James, Jason (Marion), Justin, Scott, Mark, Kirk, Rachelle and Ashley. "Dr. C" was born in the village of Chesterhorb, Poland (formerly Ukraine) in 1926. His father, mother and two older brothers John and Peter immigrated to Canada in 1929 where they homesteaded in the Quill Lake region of Saskatchewan. Fred had several passions in life. One of them was medicine and his desire to care for and heal people. He was a life-long student of medicine who was not afraid to try alternative forms of medicine as long as the desired result was accomplished. He will be remembered for his devotion as a family physician to the community of Wakaw and area for 56 years. Fred's other passion was his walk with his Heavenly Father, evidenced by his love for people, especially the disadvantaged. He was the driving force behind starting the Wakaw Baptist Church in 1956 and faithfully taught an adult Sunday School class for 56 years. He served as president of the Baptist Union of Western Canada and also was a life- long member of the Gideons. His passion for serving others extended globally through his numerous Medical mission trips to the country of Honduras. He established the Cenaiko Foundation which provides funding for numerous Christian agencies working in the world to alleviate poverty, pain and suffering for thousands of people each year. Fred also served Wakaw in numerous community positions including town mayor, president of the school board etc. His life-long achievements did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1990, and the Order of Canada in 2006. Fred was multi-talented…he was a painter, a photographer, a gardener, a businessman and as a young man, an avid sports fan. He loved to laugh and will be remembered for his sense of humor. No doubt his patients will remember that ever-present whistle as he walked up and down the hospital corridors. Dr. Cenaiko will be sorely missed by the countless lives he touched during his life of service. A celebration of Dr. Fred's life will take place at the St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Wakaw, May 9th, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Wakaw Town Cemetery. Friends wishing to make a tribute, may do so to the Cenaiko Foundation (Box 39, Wakaw, Sask. S0K 4P0) or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kushneryk Funeral Service, Wakaw, SK. 233-4403

Dr Cenaiko saved my life. I had been in severe pain for years when I saw him. After reviewing the prescriptions I was taking, he said, "I don't know why you need any of these." He strongly recommended avoiding pain medications like NSAIDs because they would work against the prolotherapy which he had just administered. Taking his advice I discontinued all meds. I GOT BETTER! Thank you, my friend! I am forever in your debt!

Our deepest condolences to Helen and the Cenaiko Family. So many great memories to cherish. Dr. C touched our lives, as he did others as well, with his kindness and friendship. We were so glad to be living in Wakaw for the time we did and be part of the Baptist Church. Dr. C had a lot of compassion when it came to family. We also had some great times of fellowship at Dr. C's and Helen's home. Great parties, great fellowship, great traditional Ukrainian Dinner's, great fun. Thanks Dr. C for being our doctor and our friend. You will be missed.

To the Cenaiko Family,
Dr. C was a man who touched many lives and will forever be remembered. He was caring, compassionate, loving, kind, talkative, cheerful and loved to whistle. Anytime I was in Wakaw Hospital you knew when Dr. C was around. He always stopped to chat and see how you were doing and always made sure to ask about the whole family no matter how busy his day was.
My father (Peter Oleksyn) cherished the ground that Dr. Cenaiko walked on and now the two are reunited and probably having many talks regarding some special white stuff they liked to talk about.

May you rest in peace Dr Cenaiko. Wakaw's loss but heavens gain..

Love

Our deepest condolences go out to all members of Dr. Cenaiko's family. When I was a student nurse I did my preceptorship at Wakaw hospital. There I witnessed first hand the love and kindness Dr. Cenaiko showed for his patients, friends and community.
I learned to admire him greatly in the short time I worked with and learned from him.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Cenaiko family. Dr. Cenaiko was a kind and generous man. A man who pinched your cheeks even though you were way past the age of cheek pinching. A man who took a genuine interest in you even if you had moved away and was just visiting. A man that you could count on to be there for you and your family...any hour, anytime. A man loved and respected by many including myself. His life, passion and contribution made my world a better place...made the world a better place. Thank-you Dr. Cenaiko.

Dr. Cenaiko was a long time family physician and friend. My earliest memories of him are from the late 1950's and the many trips from Domremy to Wakaw to see him for all our medical needs. But most of all I will never forget the constant support he gave my family delivering and caring for my handicap brother Freddie Casavant. Dr. Cenaiko went way above and beyond the call of duty making house calls in the middle of the night and always being there as my family struggled through the many challenges ahead. He has been an inspiration to all who knew him, and it was such a pleasure to stop in and see him still working at the Wakaw clinic a few years ago. He'd always welcome us with a big hug and "Hello my friend". He will be sadly missed by the community and all that he has helped over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. Thank you Dr. C, for everything you've done for us, for all these years.
