Alma LECLERC Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Sep. 25 to Sep. 26, 2014.
Alma Teresa Leclerc (Bley)
1933 - 2014
Alma Leclerc passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon Monday, September 22, 2014 after a long illness. Alma was the seventh of eight children born to Julius and Anna Bley, immigrants from the Austrian Empire before World War I. She was born in Semans, SK August 24, 1933 and attended the local school, after which she studied at St. Paul's School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1955. It was while she was a student nurse that she met Conrad Leclerc, then a University of Saskatchewan student, at a Valentine's Day dance at St. Paul's Hospital. They were married at St. Mary's Church in Saskatoon in 1956. Alma was predeceased by her parents, Julius and Anna Bley; two of her three brothers, Albert (Dona) and Carl (Ethel); her four sisters, Beth Paulsen (Paul), Louise Edmondson (Paul), Margaret Edwards (Tom), and Rose LaPierre (Lucien). She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Conrad; brother, Victor (Anne); sister-in-law, Huguette Schweiger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alma was renowned as a caring and compassionate nurse, bestowing tender loving care on all her patients. She pursued her career in several cities, first at the Saskatoon Sanatorium in post surgery, then as Head Nurse of the children's ward in the Winnipeg Sanatorium. After Conrad's transfer to Ottawa, she worked at first at the Ottawa Sanatorium, then switched to the public health field of nursing, visiting homes and schools and immunizing children against tuberculosis in health districts in Ottawa and then Sudbury. After moving to Fredericton, she became the first Program Director of the New Brunswick Lung Association. Upon Con and Alma's return to Saskatoon in 1978, Alma became Coordinator of Public Education Programs for the Saskatchewan Lung Association. She retired in 1989. After her retirement, Alma kept busy travelling and pursuing her many hobbies and interests such as gardening, reading, playing the piano and cooking. She was also an active member of the St. Paul's School of Nursing Alumni. Four years ago, Con and Alma sold their house and moved to Preston Park due to Alma's declining health. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place) on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Viewing will take place in the church at 1:00 p.m. and a reception will be held in the church auditorium immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Lung Association. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel - MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (306-978-5200) www.mourningglory.ca
