PAUL MOSTOWAY Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Mar. 22 to Mar. 23, 2012.
Paul Peter Mostoway 1929 2012 Paul Mostoway was born the youngest of 5 children on October 16, 1929 in Mayfair Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully on March 19, 2012 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Victoria (nee Wenniger); his son Patrick (Maureen), grandsons Mark and Scott; son Kelvin (Catarina); daughter Lynne (Paul McCaughey), grandchildren Shane, Caitlin, and Kevin; and by one sibling and only sister Emily Nolan. Paul was predeceased by a son Allen in 1992 and grandson Michael in 1988. Dad grew up in Guernsey and Saskatoon where he attended St. Paul's School and City Park Collegiate. After high school he worked as a sailor on the Great Lakes, a construction worker in Komano, B.C. and at the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario. He attended the University of Saskatchewan in the early 1950s and received a B.A. and a B.Ed. In addition to his studies he was a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps. and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. He started work as a teacher in 1956 and taught in Kandahar, Allan and Clavet, retiring in 1988. In 1971 after many fall suppers, Paul was elected as an NDP MLA in the Hanley Constituency; he was elected in Saskatoon Center in 1975 and again in 1978. He served as Legislative Whip and chaired a special committee on welfare and social services. After a short retirement he was elected to City Council in 1988, where he served two terms, stepping down in 1994. He was also a trustee with the Catholic School Board from 1985-1994. The first ever to hold seats as a Councilor & Trustee. Dad was involved in many organizations, including the Boy Scouts, President of the Allan Home and School Association, President of the Allan Parks and Recreation Association. The Association for the Mentally Retarded (now the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living), the Canadian Paraplegic Association, the Community Health Clinic, Royal University Hospital and the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the senate of the University of Saskatchewan and on the board of the Mendel Art Gallery. Dad was a history buff; his students soon learned they could derail his class by talking about current affairs or politics. Dad enjoyed all sports, particularly baseball and hockey as a participant, coach and spectator, following both his children and grandchildren. He and mom enjoyed camping, their first RV was a memorable orange camperised van, in that van, they made every effort to see All of Saskatchewan; along with touring Saskatchewan they enjoyed travelling across the country and abroad. In retirement they enjoyed spending time down south. Dad was an avid reader, along with reading he enjoyed languages, in retirement he started taking French language classes and became fluent in conversational French. Dad also enjoyed gardening, camping, collecting aboriginal artifacts, bird watching, the out doors, archaeology, listening to CBC radio and enjoyed nothing better than a spirited discussion around the dinner table with his family. Upon full retirement Dad's days, were filled with time spent at the YMCA and coffee at the Co-op where issues of the day would be solved around the corner table of the cafeteria. A special thanks to the transit drivers for ensuring Dad's safe passage to and from the YMCA and to the residents and staff at Colombian Manor for their support. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial donations, we ask that you consider the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or the Lung Association of Saskatchewan. Mr. Mostoway was principal and Gr 8 teacher in Kanadar when I went into Grade 5 after Big Quill and all the other country schools closed in 1960. I recall he was a principal whose attention bad boys did not want to attract! After being taught by Paul in Gr 8 I went away knowing that I had one of the best teachers any kid could ask for. I only saw him once after he left Kandahar when Martin Sanders, Garnett Eyjolfsson and I stopped in at his home in Allen around 1968.

I'm was so very sorry to hear of Paul's passing. He truly was a great man and a great teacher. I had and always will have great respect and admiration of him. I had such a grin on my face when reading his obituary, the part mentioning how his students could derail his class by talking about current affairs or politics. That was so true, and I attribute my interest in politics and current events to him! My deepest sympathy to all of you.

My condolences to Mrs. Mostoway, Kelvin, Pat, Lynn, and all the grandchildren. Mr. Mostoway was my history teacher whom I'll never forget (and maybe because of you, I now teach history and those same students can derail my lessons when they start talking politics!). My thoughts and best wishes are with you.
