Anna Burko
August 26, 1926 - November 20, 2012
Anna Margaret Burko (nee Norman) passed away peacefully on November 20, 2012. Anna was born, raised and lived her entire life in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. She attended school there and spent her early years helping her father on the family dairy farm delivering milk by horse and carriage and later working in Bergman's General Store. In 1952 she married Joe Burko, a marriage that was to last fifty-seven years until his passing in 2009. Together they raised four children. Brenda and Bob, twins, were born in 1953 and Ron came along just more than a year later. She somehow managed to survive caring for three children under the age of thirteen months and a few years later their youngest, Darrell was born. Mom's entire life was caring for her family. She washed clothes and diapers by hand and hung them on clothesline to dry. She cooked continuously. It wasn't until we all left home that we realized that not everyone ate hot lunches every day, usually three courses including potatoes. She baked bread weekly, twenty or more loafs at a time. And then there were her famous cinnamon buns. Many neighborhood boys and girls would follow the smell of fresh baking to the Burko house after school to be served bread and cinnamon buns hot from her oven. She wasn't much of a traveller. We all can remember the ordeal of packing and making the twenty- three mile trip to her sister's in Leslie or the thirty mile journey to Fishing Lake. She much preferred the comforts of her home and kitchen. Then there was her loving husband, Joe. She doted on him and cared for him every day of their life together. Joe died in 2009 only a few months after the death of their son Ron. Although she continued to live independently in her family home for a few years she never recovered from the loss of her husband and son. She was hospitalized in September of this year and died just a few short months later. She was the last surviving member of her family predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Gytha Norman, brothers Stephan, Gisli and Einar, sisters Seena, Sally and Buddy and of course husband Joe and son Ron. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her children Brenda, Bob (Jody), Darrell (Lorri); daughter-in-law Donna; grandchildren Jaclyn, David, Lenore, Robbie, Austin, Farrah, Kim, Craig, Alex and Drew; and great grandchildren Lola, Alyssa and Emmett. A private family funeral will be held at a later date.
