Dick passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Osterwick, Ukraine to Diedrich and Margareta Sawatsky and at the age of 9 months, together with his parents and grandparents, emigrated to Canada on the Empress of France. They settled in the Hague - Osler area where Dick grew up and received his schooling. He served in the 2nd World War as a Dispatch Rider; was wounded and returned to Canada in 1946. Here he married the girl who had waited for him for four years, Louise Kasdorf. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Louise; children, Ken (Merle), Elaine (Dennis Dahl), Eleanor (Doug) Bentley, and Lloyd (Debbie); grandchildren, Scott (Michelle); Keith (Sheree); Kendra (Trevor); David (Sheena); Kari (Mark), Kimberley (Brian), Devin (Sarah); Dawson; Adele and Emma; plus 13 great grandchildren. He leaves one brother John (Anne); in-laws Phyllis; Anne; Molly, Sally and Ed (Shirley). He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Helen and brothers Ike and Peter. Dick was a faithful member of the Rosthern Legion #115 and later the Saskatoon Legion #362. He was an active member of First Mennonite Church. There will be a public viewing on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Bethany Manor. The funeral service will be held at First Mennonite Church on Wed., November 28, at 2 p.m.
