GIBSON, Donald Glen
October 15, 1918 - November 30, 2013
Donald Glen Gibson passed away peacefully on November 30 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 95. He leaves to mourn: his sister Marjorie; daughter Faye (Terry) Denys; son Rick (Karlene) Gibson; grandchildren Darren (Annie) Denys; Brandon-Shea (Marcy) Mutala; and Adrienne Erickson; sister-in-law Phyllis Dickie Windsor; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his wife Eileen; brother Jack (Allie) Gibson; grandson Morgan Denys; brothers-in-law Garnet (Olive); Cecil (Jean) Windsor; and Wally Heldman. Don was born October 15, 1918 in Melfort, Sask. to Glen and Mable Gibson. He was raised on, and helped with, the family farm one mile east of Melfort. During the winters, when not farming, he also worked in the logging industry near Carrot River. He took basic army training at Dundurn near the end of the Second World War but was not called to serve. In 1946, he met Eileen Windsor and they were married June 19, 1947 in Melfort. They farmed and raised their family near Melfort until they retired to Saskatoon in 1976. Don was an extremely generous person, giving freely of his time and resources to his family and many causes. He was an active member of the Melfort Elks Club and the Melfort United Church. He sponsored a total of 12 foster children through Foster Parents Plan Canada over a 35 year period. In 1985, at the age of 67, he was thrilled to be able to travel to Honduras to visit one of his foster children. Don was always an active person. He enjoyed curling, bowling, cycling and walking and was able to continue most of these activities until shortly before his passing. He also enjoyed family get togethers and travel, all documented in his pictures and home movies. In addition to Honduras, Don's travels included Hawaii, Montreal, and England, which he visited twice, once as a very young boy. He also made many trips to BC and spent several winters in Florida, Mexico, and Texas. Don was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Memorial Service will take place on Friday, December 6, 2013, at 2:00 pm at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 - 3rd Ave. N, Saskatoon, SK. The cremated remains will be interred in the Melfort Cemetery at a future date to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
