After graduating from there, Dorothy operated an egg candling station and managed the books for her parents' hatchery and poultry ranch. In 1945, Dorothy met Leo, who came to work on the ranch. Dorothy and Leo were married on August 6, 1946. They worked at the family business for two years, then moved to Lake Lenore, where Leo was employed at M. Hopfner and Sons for five years.
