Emily Joan Roles (nee Warburton) passed away peacefully at the Father Lacombe Care Centre in Calgary on Friday, February 8, 2013. She will be remembered by her husband, Clem; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Chuck Weitzel of Mesa, Arizona; son and daughter-in-law, Allan and Brenda Roles of Calgary, Alberta; and daughter and former son-in-law, Lynn and Bob Stewart of Ottawa, Ontario. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Bradley; Matthew, Jessica, Jeremy and Michael; Eric and Glen; and one great-grandson, Christian. Joan was predeceased by two brothers, a sister and a half-sister, all from eastern Canada and the eastern United States. Joan was born in Kingston, Ontario on July 31, 1924. In 1947 she married Clemence Roles of Bruno, Saskatchewan and they took up residence in Saskatoon, where they lived until 2010 with a brief move to Edmonton for a few years in the early 1970s. Clem and Joan founded an agricultural machinery company and were active business partners in Smith-Roles Ltd. for forty years. Joan was a loving mother and wife, who always had her family's best interests at heart. She always had a quip to help lighten things up, loved the piano, and played it for family and friends right up until her death. In her younger years she played bridge, was treasurer of her women's investment club, belonged to the Engineers Wives Association, and regularly attended St. John's Anglican Cathedral. Joan learned to snow ski in her forties, and enjoyed gardening and sewing. For the past three years, she and Clem have been living in Calgary, closer to family. Memorial Services will be held at Holy Nativity Anglican Church, 12707 Bonaventure Drive S.E., Calgary, AB on March 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Columbarium. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Joan Roles, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
