Lilly Austenson (née Broten) was called to her eternal home on August 8, 2012 at Extendicare in Saskatoon. Lilly was born at Viscount September 8, 1915 to Norwegian immigrants Chris and Eline Broten. Together with her four siblings, she grew up on the family farm, enjoying the benefits of being surrounded by a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. Lilly was educated at Visount, Normal School (Saskatoon) and Briercrest Bible Institute. She taught school at Allan, Leroy and Pambrun. On July 14, 1945, she married Flt. Lt. Oliver Austenson and they set up farming at Viscount where they raised their five daughters. Lilly was very active in her community: church organist, Sunday School teacher, Home and School Association program committee member, and 4H project leader were amongst her roles. She loved music, playing the piano and organ, bird-watching, gardening, crosswords, playing Scrabble, and learning! Lilly was instrumental in bringing the Wheatland Library to the Viscount area and was the librarian for several years. She also was the leader for Friendship Bible Coffees. When she and Oliver moved to Luther Towers in Saskatoon in 1997, she was asked to reprise her role as librarian, and was happily surrounded by books once again. Lilly was predeceased by her husband Oliver, her toddler sister Evelyn Broten, and siblings and their spouses Marie (Arthur) Bergstrom, Hans (Lovern) Broten, Inga (Cliff) Haugrud, and Phillip Speller. Also gone ahead are Oliver's siblings: Gertrude (Fred) Lenz, Hans Austenson, Albert Austenson, Jo Smith, and Herman (Ruth) Austenson, grandsons Bradley Carson and Christopher Peter, great- grandson Lorens Peter and many dear cousins and friends. Grateful for Lilly's loving influence and cherishing her memory are her sister Else Speller, sister-in-law Dr. Marilyn Steel, daughters Marilla (Don) Schenk, Trudy (Wayne) Peter, Lillian (Clare) Kirkland, Tress Austenson and Wendy Austenson, ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Extendicare for providing care and comfort to our mother in her final years. Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, August 14 at 1:30 at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, conducted by Pastor Ivar Moen.
