May 4, 1937 - September 25, 2012
With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Sokul announce her passing on the morning of September 25 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 75. Mary was born May 4, 1937 to Mike and Nellie Shevella on the family farm in the Round Hill School District South of Wynyard. She had one older brother, Peter, and one younger brother Eddy. Similar to all the pioneer children of this generation, mom's early life entailed hard work on the family farm. Mom attended and received an elementary education in the rural school but most of her days were spent helping out with the numerous chores on the farm or working for neighbors to earn supplemental income. Mom had a love for animals and would spend endless hours caring for the horses, cows and chickens. She would help her mom take care of the huge garden that was planted faithfully every spring. This tradition defined who Mary was. She had a natural "GREEN THUMB" always in her gardens or planting flowers for her yard. Mary married Stanley Sokul on October 25, 1958 residing in Earl Grey and Regina Beach until they moved to Wynyard. They were blessed with six children, three boys and three girls. Mary was predeceased by her grandparents Dymetro (Mike) and Anne (Bayda) Skrypnyk in 1947 and 1965 respectively; father Michael Shevella (1982); brother Eddy in infancy (1947); brother Peter (1994); and her husband of 50 years Stanley (2008). Mary is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her 95 year old mother Nellie; her six children and ten grandchildren: son Walter (friend Christine); son Michael (Marny) (Brianne and Taylor); daughter Audrey (friend Rick), son-in-law Jerome (Travis, Jayden, Taysha) Tymryk; son Morris (Stephanie) (Rylan and Jaslyn); daughter Patricia (Kevin) (Brendon, Shane, Kristen) Sherban; and daughter Marlene. Mary was a life-long caregiver to her immediate and extended community family. She ran a babysitting service out of her home for numerous kids. She was a custodian at St. Mary's church during the 70's and 80's. Every year she loved to host the traditional Christmas and Easter meals including cabbage rolls and perogies. She played an enormous role in raising her grandchildren. She was a very charitable woman who was willing to lend a helping hand in any way that she could. She enjoyed being a member of St. Mary's CWL. For entertainment Mary loved to attend and play bingo with her mom and her friends. More recently mom enjoyed the friendships established over coffee with all the other residents at Maple Grove. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff at Royal University Hospital who took care of Mary during her brief stay. A special thank you to the nurses on Ward 6100 who cared for Mary during her final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Wynyard CARRES Home (Box 1048, Wynyard, SK S0A 4T0). Funeral Service will be held in Wynyard on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
