Norma Lillian Solvason passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the age of 76 years with her family by her side. Norma fought a valiant battle with diabetes, however, after 3 years of undergoing dialysis 3-4 times a week, she was tired and ready to move on to a better place. Norma was born to Sam and Etta McAfee on the family farm in the Haglof District south of Mozart, SK on May 21, 1936. After Sam's passing in 1952, Etta and her two daughters moved into Wynyard, SK. It was in Wynyard where Norma started her banking career with the Bank of Montreal. Her first job with the bank was to walk around town daily having bank drafts signed by the different business owners so their bills could be paid by the bank. It was also in Wynyard where she met and later married Gordon Solvason on September 17, 1955. In the spring of 1956, Gordon and Norma moved to Wadena, where Norma worked at the CIBC before they started their family of 5 children. Several moves later, (Wynyard, Raymore and Montmarte) Gordon and Norma settled in Regina in 1966, where Norma once again went to work for CIBC, where she worked until her retirement in September 1998. After Gordon's sudden passing in 1978, Norma spent many, many hours at the hockey rink, fund raising for hockey, and travelling to out of province tournaments. She was a "hockey Mom" and proud of it. After all the children had grown up and moved out, Norma could indulge her love of the arts. There was always an antique show to attend with her sister Ruth and brother-in-law Eddie. She also enjoyed attending the Regina Little Theatre with her CIBC buddies. Norma made many road trips with her sister-in- law Eleanor to see family and friends, or just go and see someplace interesting. Norma loved reading, sewing, baking, gardening and just sitting with a good cup of coffee and a friend. She also loved sitting inside, where she could watch a good thunderstorm rage outside. Norma was a brave woman and she will be thought of often with much love and admiration. Norma was predeceased by her husband of only 23 years Gordon; son Morley; parents Sam and Etta; sister Ruth; brothers-in-law Eddie, Tom, Kris and Dick (Eleanor). Norma is survived by her children Doug; Lorraine (Harold), Darryl and Lorne; grandchildren Stewart (Dezarae), Christine (Bryan), Kayla (Cody), Matthew (Julia) and Rachelle (Thomas); great-granddaughter Emily; sisters-in-law Margaret and Shirley; as well as many very special friends, nieces and nephews. A GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be held at Regina Memorial Gardens, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Wednesday August 8, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Please meet on the service road at 1:15 p.m. Donations in Norma's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1400 522 University Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5G 2R5. Family and friends are invited to sign the online obituary and tributes page at www.regina-memorial.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306) 789-8850.
