Roy Pickford
September 19, 1917 - January 14, 2014
Roy Pickford passed away Jan 14, 2014 in Victoria B.C. Roy grew up in Moose Jaw, Sk. He served in the Second World War and it was there he met Ada ter Braake in Holland. They married in 1948. After returning from the war, Roy and Ada took up residency in Saskatoon where Roy began his studies in Entomology at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating, he worked in research at Agriculture Canada at the U of S until the mid seventies. He completed a PHD during his career and he spent a year in England on sabbatical at the London Locust Center which included a trip to Africa to study locusts up close. Roy and Ada retired to Brentwood Bay, B.C. Some years later they moved to Thetis Island, B.C. where they built a home in the forest and began an intensive gardening operation with fruit trees, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Grafting fruit trees was one of Roy's specialities. Sailing, reading, woodworking and gardening were just some of Roy's many hobbies. He loved to travel and Roy and Ada enjoyed visiting many countries throughout the world. Cherished the most were the family trips to the mountains to camp and to ski, and to Redberry Lake to sail. Roy and Ada Pickford were founding members of the Saskatoon Sailing Club back in the 60's. Roy is predeceased by his wife Ada in 2010, his parents Fred and Anna Pickford, his brother Mervin Pickford, and his brother-in-law Peter Kallos. To lovingly cherish his memory, he leaves his children Benjamin (Patricia) Pickford of Saskatoon, Sk, his daughter Verna (Pierre) Laliberte and their children Alex and Julie of Victoria B.C., his sister Verna Kallos of Winnipeg, MB, and sister-in-law Isabelle Pickford of Nanaimo, B.C. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date on Thetis Island, B.C.
