Mrs. Sophie Schenstead (nee Marko) passed away peacefully on November 5, 2012 at the age of 96. Sophie, one of twelve children, was born near Tway, SK on Dec. 31, 1915 to Nicholas Marko and Anna Synchyna. Sophie raised two girls on the farm during the 30s and completed a hairdressing course at this time. Sophie began a second family and raised three more children during the 1950s and 60s. Always a music lover, she enjoyed singing, playing the harmonica, fiddle, and piano. Sophie was skilled at crocheting and knitting and made many wall hangings, decorative items, sweaters, gloves, toques, and other garments which were admired by many. Sophie was an avid reader and keenly interested in religion, the Bible, astronomy, science, and history. Sophie read and spoke two languages Ukrainian and English, and enjoyed the arts, including Ukrainian dancing, food, poetry, and music. Sophie will be sadly missed and is survived by her children Pauline Brisbourne of Fort Kent, AB, Loretta Allon of Calgary, Darlene Schenstead (Pearl), Charles Schenstead and Benjamin Schenstead of Saskatoon; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Gloria Connelly, Olga Hryciw, Evan Marko, Pauline Cummings, and Anne Gammie. Sophie was predeceased by her siblings Peter Marko, Nellie Samborski, Mary Shiptisky, John Marko, Anthony Marko, and Antoinette Jessen. The family would like to thank the staff at the Saskatoon Convalescent Home who provided excellent care for Mom over the last four years. The funeral service will be held at Martens Warman Funeral Home (tel.934-4888), 402 Central St W, Warman, Friday, Nov 9, 2012, 11:00 AM conducted by Robin Langstroth. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements in care of MARTENS WARMAN FUNERAL HOME.
