OKEREN, Solmaz Fatma
March 28, 1926 – April 18, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Solmaz Okeren on Friday, April 18, at St. Paul's Hospital with her loving and beloved son Izim at her side. She is predeceased by her parents Muzehher and Fehmi Sabuncugil, her loving husband of 57 years, Turhan, and her sister Seref Sabuncugil. She is survived by her only son Izim, brother Koklen Sabuncugil, nephews Kerim Sabuncugil, Fehmi Comert and Bulent Comert and relatives. Solmaz was born in Ayvalik, Turkey, and graduated from American Girls' College in Istanbul. She was married in 1947 and moved to the United States where she gave birth to Izim. She then returned to and lived in Istanbul, Turkey, until immigrating to Canada in 1961, subsequently moving from Toronto to Saskatoon in 1966. She enjoyed many activities such as painting, crocheting, needlework, shopping, cooking, solving puzzles, playing cards and backgammon. She had an excellent fashion sense and looked beautiful on the outside to match her inner beauty. Solmaz touched the hearts of many and took interest in everyone she met because she genuinely loved people. She will be greatly missed by her family, many close friends and acquaintances and she will live in our hearts forever. After Funeral Prayers she was Interred in Woodlawn Cemetery on April 19. A Memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the W.A. Edwards Family Centre, 333 4 Avenue N., Saskatoon, across from Saskatoon Funeral Home where complementary parking is available. Those who knew and loved Solmaz are welcome to attend. You are invited to bring a story to share. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Solmaz's name may be made to: Heart and Stroke Foundation, 279 - 3rd Avenue N., Saskatoon or to: Cardiac Rehabilitation Group (CARG) at Saskatoon Field House, 2020 College Drive, Saskatoon.
