Pearl passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the age of 99 years. Pearl is survived by her two daughters, Sonya (Ron) Padd, Geraldine Wallace; son, Morris; grandchildren, Michelle (Rob) Scheller, Jason (Kim) Padd, Elaine (Ken) Nontell, Michael Kalynka; four great- grandchildren, Joel, Joshua, Amanda, Benjamin; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John (1994); sons, Bobby (in infancy), Walter; daughter-in-law; Jane; son- in-law, Leslie; parents, Mary and John Gaftoniak; three sisters, Ann Balon, Dora Antonenko, Lena Nyiforuk; two brothers, John, Metro; and stepbrother, Alec. Pearl was born to Mary (Bilyk) and John Gaftoniak on December 26, 1914 in the Sniatyn district, Saskatchewan. She later met and married John Kalynka in 1936 and together they farmed for many years in Meacham, Colonsay and Blucher. They later moved to Saskatoon when dad retired. Mom enjoyed being outdoors gardening and planting a lot of flowers which she took pride in. When she wasn't doing that she was making borscht, perogies, baking bread and sewing. It seemed she always had to be doing something. Mom worked part-time catering banquets at the Sheraton Cavalier for a few years. She also became an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for many years. Mom was a kind, loving person and a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren, Joshua and Joel, spending time with her and being called "Baba". Mom will forever be remembered as a loving, caring and generous person. The family extends a special thank you to St. Paul's Hospital staff for their excellent care of Mother. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 - 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK, with Very. Rev. Fr. Taras Makowsky officiating.
