Peter (Pete) Gavin Niven
Peter passed away Sunday, June 30, 2014 with his loving family at his side. Peter was born February 17, 1933 at his Grandma Plews' home in Baljennie, SK to Gordon Niven and Evelyn (Plews). Peter worked for Calgary Power and then Sask. Power for a total of 36 years. He began as a lineman and in later years was a regional director. He spent his last 20 career years in La Ronge, serving Northern SK. After retirement he refined his welding skills.
Peter had many interests. He was an avid reader and a family historian. He was a cross country skier, racing in events across the country. He also ran marathons and enjoyed cycling. He was a talented pianist, loving music of the thirties and forties. Peter was a member of Dundurn United Church and a long time member of A.A.
Family was so very important in Peter's life. He is survived by his best friend, and wife of 57 years, Ruth (formerly Steve); as well as his son, Gordon (Dawn) and daughters Janice Skilliter (Bruce) and Laura Niven (Randy). He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Graham Skilliter (Chelsea), Jennifer Niven, Natalie Skilliter (Dustin) and Tyson, Jordon and Logan Schanowski. Peter is also survived by brothers, Tom Niven and Cleve Bates. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon Niven; mother, Evelyn Bates; stepfather, Robert Bates; also his brother, Guy Niven.
A Family Graveside Service will be held at Spinney Hill Cemetery on Saturday, July 5th and a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 7th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin's United Church (2617 Clarence Ave South, Saskatoon). Those wishing to, may make donations to the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation (1702 20th St West, Saskatoon, S7M 0Z9).
